One of the few picks by Darryl that turned out to be a good player

We certainly had some ugly drafts during his tenure, but its nice that a few picks turned out pretty well for us:
- Backlund, Bouma, Brodie, Ortio, and Ferland (possibly Arnold too).

Its pretty awesome to see the 2011 draft once Feaster took over:
- Baertschi, Granlund, Wotherspoon, and Gaudreau. Only Brossoit hasn't played in the NHL yet.

Looks like his focus on skills development in the off-season is paying off! Really great to see someone like him slowly developing into a much more rounded and effective player out there.

Easily replaced by Wolf who has 18 pts right now in the AHL.

I love watching Sean Monahan score clutch goals, and Johnny Gaudreau make crazy dangles at the blue line to hit unexpected guys with perfect passes, and Gio take the team on his back when they're down, and Brodie make end to end rushes...
... but most of all I love watching Lance Bouma stick that red mouth guard out in someones face after crunching them.

2Mx4years.

Treliving said Lance represents the "DNA" of the team.

Put your money where your mouth is Brad. Lock this kid up, he's a warrior.

(A warrior that should play PK and fourth line duties on a contender... but a frickin' warrior none the less)

Bouma... It's because he's so gritty.

He would come a lot cheaper than that, plus I wouldn't sign a 4th liner to a 4 year deal.

A 3yrs x $1.5m deal would get it done.

Bouma sits currently 8th for points on the Flames.
I think this is exactly right. Bouma is the heart and soul player that provides that extra effort every shift that breathes life into the team while the star players are resting.

Any team that makes it deep into the playoffs have minimum 1 type of Bouma player and maybe a few of them. Look at the Cup winners over the years, their 3rd and 4th lines have excellent heart and soul, shot blocking, hard working, grinding, body checking guys willing to put it out there every night. It's a critical part to any team's success.

Good to see the guy getting the results even if they aren't all that necessary for his type of game.

The 2011 draft was great but I really think the turnaround started in the 2010 draft where they picked Reinhart, Arnold and Ferland. Nothing earth-shattering but considering they had no picks in the first 2 rounds, that was some pretty good scouting.

This is a stretch of consecutive picks and how many NHL games they have played (year, round, player, NHL games):

2010 4th Arnold 1
2010 5th Ferland 10
2010 7th Holland 5
2011 1st Baertschi 65
2011 2nd Granlund 40
2011 2nd Wotherspoon 14
2011 4th Gaudreau 47
2011 6th Brossoit 0 (pretty likely that the Oilers give him a shot at some point)
2012 1st Jankowski 0 (we shall see - I think it's a good bet that he sees an NHL game)
2012 2nd Sieloff 0 (playing in the AHL, so not too far away from a call-up)
2012 3rd Gillies 0 (highly touted prospect)
2012 4th Kulak 0 (currently in the ECHL, so a longer shot but entirely possible)
2012 5th Culkin 0 (probably behind Wotherspoon right now on the call-up list)

That is 13 consecutive draft picks between 2010 and 2012. I am not saying it's a guarantee by any stretch, but there is a chance, a fairly decent chance, that all 13 play at least one NHL game.

That would be an insane stretch of drafting! Especially considering there are only 2 1sts and 3 2nds on that list.

By the way, after that, there are 2 unlikely's (Gordon and DeBlouw) followed by Monahan, Poirier, Klimchuk

Can't dislike a dude like this. Even in the dog moments of a game where the team can't seem to generate anything, is getting hemmed in, and skating in molasses, Bouma is the guy finishing checks and keeping the intensity up.

Further, his durability leaves my mind emphatically bottled. I can't count the number of times that I've at least assumed he'd have to leave the game after some ridiculous incident along the boards, or a blocked shot...yet nope, there he is on the next shift.

If he had Backlund's body, he'd be atomized dust floating through space somewhere already.

He put up points in junior on a memorial cup team and is getting more opportunities now that we have 4 lines that can put up points. Bouma being a big part of that bottom depth with a very complete game.

Already a fan favourite, I could see him as an Alternate Captain in the next couple years. He's seems like a better version of Prust, minus the fighting and plus the scoring while still playing more physical.

Yes. We're in love.
