The hostage takers are apparently speaking to 2 media outlets.
EDIT: To clarify, they are "speaking" to media outlets via hostages and having the hostages relay their messages.

Breaking: Our #TenNews team have spoken directly to two hostages inside the café… They are confirming two demands from the perpetrator: He needs the ISIL flag to be directly delivered to the cafe; And his 2nd request is to speak to the Prime Minster. They also state there are 4 bombs… two inside the Lindt café at Martin Place - and two further in the Sydney CBD. Updates as they come to hand.

Hostages escaping, guy needs a flag delivered because he doesn't think to bring his own. I'm half expecting to see this photo released from inside the scene....

Morning everyone
Maybe intrigue isn't the right word, but I was following the Australian broadcast news and was really impressed with their professionalism in reporting this. Similar to how we reported the Ottawa incident, everything was reported in a calm manner, no sensationalism, and they maintaining that they are keeping to the facts and trying not to speculate.

Sounds like some more hostages escaped/were released at the same time as a mound bang sounded. Some news outlets are reporting gunshots (via Twitter) and police are storming the cafe. Scary situation.
Also sounds like the suspect has a well known history with police.

Well they stormed the Cafe. Seems unlikely they would do that unless they were quite certain they could take them out.

Between the hostages escaping, the terrorist bringing the wrong flag to work, and his demand to speak with the Prime Minister, this guy doesn't strike me as being able to coordinate a mass bombing in Sydney. Seems more like an attention seeker...

Unfortunately, all signs pointed to a lone gunman. I'm thinking that one is the scum, and one is a hostage.

Gets worse. Gunman was arrested so sounding like 2 hostages dead and 3 in critical condition.

Doesn't sound confirmed yet since some are reporting the gunman was killed along with 2 others, with 3 others being injured.

The funny thing is that Australian Judges can include a hard labor component to their sentences. This scum bag sexual pervert, accessory to his wife's death is going to hear the gates slam at Long Bay prison, forgotten by the rest of the world as he contemplates the rest of his life moving rocks from one side of the prison yard to the other.
A fate worse then death and martyrdom.
