I think trying from our position of strength. Strong forwards ready to bring into the league we could nab a defensemen in a similar situation. We don't need all of grand lurk feraland pourer, klimchuk, barechi, etc. so swapping for a few 20 year old defensive prospects who are almost ready but being held back because of depth would be good.
In wonder if we could get Meyers for some kind of package.

I think they should at least try for one. Depending on the cost, I think this team has a chance to get better by dealing from a position of strength... we don't want to give up prospects but we could and it wouldn't really cripple us. If we gave up a prospect for another prospect it would be good or if we could somehow do a Glencross for young defenseman it would really work out well too.... If it costs too much then just go with what we have. Staal in free agency would be awesome.

Almost every team in the league is looking for more depth on D. It's been a big topic since the season began. You think you'd be able to outbid Philadelphia or Dallas without sacrificing assets for the rebuild? Think again.
This season is entirely gravy at this point. You explore the possibility of trading one of our prospects for an equally rated defensive prospect but that's not an established 2nd pairing defenceman able to help win now. You don't sacrifice future to shore up the D to make up for Russell's injury and lack of depth. You ride this out knowing the Flames aren't winning the cup this year, but they could be if you manage your assets right in the next 3-5 years. That is not sending picks or promising prospects for lower ceiling but established NHL players.

Anything to push Engelland of the team would be fantastic.

I'd be fine with a reasonable last pairing guy (i.e. better than Engelland and Diaz) to lower the cost.

After just signing him, there is no way the Flames do that. As for out bidding other teams there is more to it than just that. The pens have a glut of good young defensemen and can deal them away for help up front. The Flyers need some help on D and can give up some of their forward depth but do you think those teams are going to help each other out? Teams are going to be more likely to deal with the Flames because they might not see the Flames as an immediate threat or someone they'd face a lot or in the playoffs.

The Flames need to ride out the roster they opened up the season with as this team is no longer "all-in" to make the playoffs. There will be options in the offseason that will be far less costly and prohibitive to the long term job at hand which is the rebuild into a hopeful Stanley Cup contender.

The Flames have the NHL defenceman leader in goals on their 2nd pairing.
And people here are complaining about wanting a #3?

Unfortunately we just have to stay the course and develop from within unless a smoking deal comes along (not likely to happen). We have wotherspoon who is almost ready... sigh

Sven for Gormley makes sense for Calgary, but does it for Phoenix?

I don't see a 2nd paring defenseman as the top priority either long term or short term, but if one lands on our lap, of course you take it.
Obviously they should be looking at making any moves that improve the team in the long term. The rebuild is nowhere near complete yet and any moves they make should keep the big picture in mind and not be focused on short term improvement.

I say we ride it out as is and see where the chips fall. This team is playing above expectations and if they do falter it won't be a huge disaster. If they made trades to shore up the team and then they faltered I think it would be seen as a colossal fail and people would be angry over what we had to give up.
The Flames will be a better option for free agents this year now that they have been able to show case their talent and future. I would wait until then to add that 3rd D man. You might pay more, but there is ample cap room.

Not for this year.
What you'd like to see is one of Wotherspoon or Sieloff to make the jump from the AHL to the NHL this year, and then competing for a top four spot next year. Both still have good upside IMO.

Yes! Treliving should always be looking to improve the team. Can Burke chime in and help trade rape someone?? Sure hope so!

Horizon? Other than Wotherspoon I don't see much competition for defence spots amongst our prospects. We have some possibilities but that's about it.

and why are we rushing again?
Present focus got this franchise into the trouble it's in ... lets not go back to it.
