As much as I love reserved seating it costs too bloody much. Not many movies are worth the regular price of admission these days, let alone $20 to see a 3D movie in AVX/VIP. Then if you wanna buy food and whatnot the price skyrockets to like $50 a person (if you factor in gas).
Pretty much why we rarely go to movies these days, and prefer to watch things at home via something like Netflix or Red Box. It's just way too expensive, and it's kind of a hassle to go to the theatre. The experience at home is frankly a lot more enjoyable.
That and the fact that every movie these days seems to be some superhero movie...a genre I just have no interest it. In my opinion the storytelling and writing on shows on HBO, Showtime etc, is infinitely more interesting and original.

You could probably take a nice trip instead of seeing 10-12 movies a year.
There really should be a monthly/yearly movie pass, in which you can see as many movies as you want if you spend a few hundred on one every year. I know some chains in the States have a program like that running.
Unless I can snap up a free preview ticket, I choose to wait until movies hit the cheap theatre. At $5.00 you don't feel cheated if the movie is crap. On the weekends I often take in a double (early and late) feature. Judging by the crowds people seem to be willing to wait.
Movie theatres here in Taiwan are awesome. All of them are reserved seating, you can bring in anything you want, booze, outside food, a pizza, whatever. It's fantastic.
The first time I experienced reserved seating was in Bangkok years ago. It was a theatre designed for couples as the seats were lazy-boys in pairs of 2. Reclining seats that had pillows and blankets. There was a button you'd press and a server would come to you asking if they could get you any snacks.
Woman goes to theatre with a strict "no phones" policy.
Woman used phone in darkened theatre.
Woman gets kicked out.
Woman leaves angry voicemail with the theatre.
Theatre takes voicemail and turns it into an ad for the theatre (NSFW, language)...
Sometimes I think we as a society are advancing and becoming more intelligent. And then something like this happens and I lose all faith in that theory.
Kudos to their marketing department for turning a customer complaint into a sweet advertisement.
I have been generally in favor of reserved seating. But there can be drawbacks as well. For instance today, I took my son to the London IMAX to watch How to Train your Dragon 2. Initially I was very happy as I reserved us great seats and of course we didn't have to turn up early as we knew we had them, therefore the journey in was stress free.
However, just before the movie a couple came in and sat next to us as you would expect as the theater was nearly full. The guy who sat next to me had the most god awful breath. More than a few times, it was noticeable.
If it weren't reserved seating, I could and would have moved elsewhere.
You do know that just because you go to the movies doesn't mean you have to order food, right? Everyone knows that the popcorn, candy, etc. is priced way higher than most places. I watch movies all the time at home, but I seldom need a 64 oz pop, huge bowl of popcorn and a 15 Twizzlers while I watch it. You can eat at home, and go to a movie, and it's not that expensive. You can probably plan ahead and sneak in a chocolate bar in your purse or jacket. I just don't get the urge to eat a lot of food, just because I'm sitting in a dark from for 2 hours. I'd rather get a whole pizza, either before or after the movie, for less than those mini pizzas in the theatres, and I'll also have leftovers for the next day.

I got kicked out of a theater the other day for bringing my own food in. I argued that the concession stand prices were outrageous. Besides, I hadn't had a barbecue in a long time.

I've walked into several movies with Tim Hortons coffee and a few times they mention "you can't bring that in" and I usually just ignore them and keep walking as only once they made an issue out of it and I told them to call security for the guy with coffee and she said this time only and don't bring it in again.

The popcorn at the movies is much better than the stuff you buy the groceries. Other than that, you can sneak in pop and candy, but I always get the popcorn cause the smell is irresistible.

For most people it's become a habit to sit watching a movie while munching on some popcorn and drinking a soda. It doesn't help matters that when you buy a ticket your nose is hit with the smell of freshly popped popcorn.

Utilize a woman and stuff it in her purse. Never once been bothered, wife and I usually grab some fast food before going to the theater as we don't really like theater food.

I mean, I get that it's silenced, but then you check your Facebook, Twitter or whatever in a dark theater, I don't care how careful you're trying to be, we can all see the light screaming out of your phone like the light beams in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
