I'm all for cutting that thigh part down and having it replaced with a smaller, harder thigh pad that covers the top of the knee when bent. Also ok with cutting the extra pieces off the gloves that aren't provided protection, just covering more space.
I agree they should reduce the extra pieces of padding on the gloves and the only reason the pads are so long is to block the 5 hole when they butterfly they serve no purpose from a safety stance. They always have to keep the goalies safe but lets be honest, the equipment is insane.
I play goalie and I'm glad the equipment is large . specifically the gloves. The cheater on the blocker and catcher has saved my wrists.The larger end on the blocker has saved my knuckles so many times from people hacking away at loose pucks.

The nets should be the size of soccer nets, then who cares what goalies wear........games that end 17 to 13 will be infinetly more exciting than the 1 - nil snoozer that the flames just offered up.....

Amen to this, I do a Hasek and cover the puck with the blocker hand so I can feel the puck; this goes double for me.

The equipment and coaching today has for sure made the game less athletic and more about size and positioning. That said if you shrink the goalie equipment, gotta get rid of those slingshot sticks too.

IMO, goalies today are far more athletic than goalies of the 80's and even the 90's when Panger played. Just watch some of those old clips -- compared to today, the goalies barely moved back then. Of course, it helps that your goalie pads don't weigh 20 pounds a piece anymore

This. I read an article that somebody posted on one of the Group Facebook page's but I can't seem to find it anymore as it was 2 weeks ago. It states that today's NHL goaltenders are a lot more athletic than people give them credit for and that shorter pads don't make a difference at all.

The advances made over the years on both goalie and players equipment have without a doubt changed the way the game is played. But the changes to the goalies equipment has had a much more astounding affect on the game then the addition of composite sticks ever will. There is no comparison.

You could let every goalie in the league Garth Snow super-size their gear but if they played with the same techniques as Grant Fuhr and goalies prior to that era with today's shooters, the scoreboard would read like a football statline.
Ben Bishop has his numbers because he's good, not because he's big and therefore wears big gear. Reduce his equipment and he'll likely adjust. Keep on reducing it and he will get hurt. So I don't think it's as simple as, "OMFG, his gear is so big. Why so unfair. Hallsy needs more goals."
If people want to see 14-7 games, then nothing needs to be done about today's goalie equipment. What needs to be done is changing the position fundamentally from a rules standpoint, such as not allowing goalies to drop to their knees, not allowing them to leave the crease ever, or making them wear a pirate eye patch at all times.

Odd, my neighbour that played at a high level (WHL), think differently. He is now 36ish, and says he notices a huge difference with players shots. When he was young it was a skill to have a good shot, not everyone, including beer leagues have a good shot.............
I agree with the posters who say positioning is everything now.
Just make the nets a touch bigger to account for these Godzillas playing net.
As far as the 'athletic' goalies and art of goaltending... I'm sorry, but goalies do not stand out any longer. Where is the personality of a great goalie? I don't see any Roys or even Belfours or Richters in today's game. They are all the same... They all look the same and do roughly the same job with massive pads and great positioning.
Bring the art of goaltending back... Make the nets bigger and make goalies do something special. Also, scoring 50 goals in an 82 game season should not be such a Herculean task.
