With regards to the door-to-door business. Yes it's super annoying, but I have been visited by each of Just Energy, Direct Energy and Enmax. So I'm not sure them coming to your door is an indicator of a scam any moreso than the other guys.

And they're at it again. How are these guys still allowed to operate?

Their office is down the street from ours. We see these kids out for a smoke and then getting loaded into vans to be delivered to the burbs.
If anyone wants an address we can start coordinating visits to their office...just to see their bill.

I just don't understand the door to door sales pitch approach. When I'm at home the last thing I'd ever be interested in is a sales pitch for a utilities company (or home alarm company) and its even worse when they want you to sign immediately rather than taking time to think about it. Legitimate companies don't have to go door to door and rely on pressure tactics

Just Energy itself isnt a scam. It is legit energy provider.
What is a scam is the door to door sales tactics, the carefully worded claims that indicate you will save money when they are only claiming a lower rate, which might be true, but they dont mention the fact that the increased 'service fee' will mostly eat any possible savings. Even then, the people doing the door to door are motivated to bend or break those rules.
Also, found out the hard way, if you miss a payment by more than 30 days, they instantly cancel your contract, add the cancellation penalty to your final bill.
Source: I was once signed up to a Multi-Level marketing program for Just Energy because my Mom paid for the 'sign up fee', for reasons which essentially boiled down to give my Grandpa people 'under him'.

They showed up at my place twice in the last month.
Claiming their energy is somehow greener.
I laughed and said no thanks.
One dude had the balls to ask me if I even cared about being green.
I said no and the look on his face was priceless.
The other was a chick that said - "Oh don't worry I'm not trying to sell you anything, I just need to see your bill". I said that I'm not interested and she repeated herself word for word and just stood there, waiting for me to get my bill, as if now that she said exactly the same thing I will comply.
So we stood there for a good 5 seconds - her waiting for me to get the bill, me waiting for her to GTFO my porch.
Eventually she left.
Just thinking about it, pisses me off.

They dropped by my place for the first time about a week ago. Claimed they only used green energy and it would be cheaper to use that green energy with them. I don't understand how they can be allowed to say things like that. If green energy was truly cheaper, you think anyone would continue to use more polluting ways? What a joke.

Haha, they are always so baffled when someone is wise to their scheme. I had one last fall just after we moved in.
"Can I see your energy bill to check for lost savings?"
"No, I'm not interested"
"You aren't interested in getting more savings?"
"Nope, I'm not showing you my bill"
"Okay..." as I slowly close the door.

I've had them come twice to my place, though not for over a year now.
The first time I didn't know who they were but was suspicious enough to not hand over my bill, I agreed to take his literature then immediately threw it out.
The second time I flat out asked if they were from "Just Energy", then slammed the door in their face when they said yes.

Probably deserves its own thread but anyone get the Vivent security guys come to your door? They won't give me their card or contact info so I can do my research and cal them back.
It was either commit now or they leave. Made my choice pretty easy. See ya. Don't trust anyone that won't give you time to do your proper due diligence.

Heard my gf talking to someone at the door a few weeks ago, when I heard her say the key words "I don't want to show you my bill". (Phew, much brighter than my ex-wife).
I went over and said no thanks while closing the door. Then explained to my gf why, she took 30 seconds on google and was pissed that they tried to do what they do.

There's a reason they are (were?) sued in the states for their sales tactics.

Here's a good article to read in regards to their sales tactics and that they generally do not actually save you any money:

Complaints were so numerous that CUB tried to get Just Energy’s license pulled in Illinois. The Illinois state’s attorney office laid consumer fraud charges against the company in 2008, which resulted in the company paying $1 million back to customers. Part of that settlement involved Just Energy conducting an audit of its sales practices, which revealed the company had received 30,000 complaints in one year alone in Illinois.

I was in Recordland when these guys came in and tried to talk the owner into switching to their security system. Man, that guy rambled on for 10 minutes with a glorious, expletive-filled delivery of how security companies had screwed him in the past and these guys just bolted and everybody in the store had a chuckle.
