Windsor has turned into a gong show since the Hall/Ryan Ellis led dynasty they had with two Memorial Cups. They were sanctioned for illegal benefits (similar to Portland out West) and then were building for to host the 2014 Memorial Cup.

They lost their two top defenseman to injuries (and traded their other main defenseman) and are now getting railroaded.

The actions (inactions) of the coach in situations like this are almost never irrelevant. There's no question that the player handled this incredibly poorly, but questions can be asked as to whether the coach may have played a role in creating the situation in the first place. If the regular goalie was sick, that does mitigate Boughner's culpability, however.

I mean the coaches comments. How does that show the coach or team quit on him first?

I never meant that those comments implied that.

But from all reports, the Spitfires have been terrible. His teammates gave up and didn't care. It's obviously just a little more noticeable when the goaltender gives up.

The first two games the guy wasn't even in net. Nobody gave up on him...they just aren't that good.

There may be an (extremely thin) excuse to pull yourself out of the game. There's no excuse to pack up your things and go home while the game is still on.

A 19 year old with 36 career games likely had no pro career to ruin anyways.

Hard to say for sure how much fault everyone deserves without knowing what was said to the goalie beforehand. I do wonder why Windsor didn't have a different back-up ready if the goalie was sick.

Regardless hard to see how Boughners comments are appropriate for junior aged players whether the guy knew he was the only option or not. They seem pretty petty and designed to be hurtful towards a 19 year old guy put in a tough spot.

I would put blame on the OHL and their continued allowance of the Hunters to buy/bribe players. The fact that with these two teams playing it is the Spitfires who were sanctioned and the Knights go on scott free is a joke.

be interesting to hear the kids side of it.

You'd think the two goalies are sitting beside each other in the room, and if one is sick, the other knows....

no one went to locker room to check on him? it takes a while for a goalie to de-gear and pack up.

He gets scholarship money based on how many games he played in the OHL that wouldn't change.

It looks like he played one season so he gets whatever the equivalent of that is in scholarship money.

Surprised you don't hear more stories like this, as these kids are made promises left right and center which are welched on almost on a whim. These organizations recruit the kids so hard, then will change directions for the flavor of the day or hour.

Particularly bad for goalies, and the Spitfires have an awful track record.

What the goalie did was dumb, but you don't make comments like this about a player.
I would. That's total BS to leave like that. What a s### teammate. I would also cut him from the team. I don't care that you have up 8 goals, that doesn't give you the right to be a bad teammate. I'm glad he said that. I hope some of the players say stuff too.

I agree. He's a junior, and I'm not advocating for him to not be excused for his actions, or not given the opportunity to learn and grow from his mistake.

My comment was towards the folks wanting to basically overlook the fact that this kid did "make a mistake" because they feel Boughner handled it less than perfectly. Doesn't matter. He shouldn't have walked out on his team, and it should be handled appropriately to teach the appropriately lesson for the kid so he can grow from it and become a better hockey player, team mate and person from it. It shouldn't be handled as an "its ok you did that cause coach made a mistake" type of fashion.

The Hurricanes had two kids leave the team and at least 4 kids ask to be moved (likely more).

This is after 5 years of horrible mismanagement on every level and the worst record in the CHL. So it does happen it just takes a lot.

I think for the most part these kids and their parents have bought into the dream so much that they all think they are NHL bound. Rocking the boat and quitting aren't things that will help you get there.

I think if there were more realistic assessment of kids futures guys would walk away from some if these toxic environments much sooner.

I also think the leagues need to take more of active role in some of these situations. What is going on in Lethbridge is an embarrassment and allowing it to continue could really do damage to kids here and their enjoyment of the game and that should never happen with 16, 17 and even 18 year old kids.

I have a feeling there's more to this than just that. Given Boughner's comments, I imagine that relationship was pretty bad prior to this game. Sounds like a crappy situation that handled poorly by all sides.

Hope the kid finds his way back into hockey at some point.

What a joke, I'm a goalie and I totally get this, happy that he walked off.

Coach should be embarrassed for what he said, this is a 19 year old kid not a 10 year NHL vet.

When you think about it... junior hockey is ridiculous. People complain about NCAA athletes being exploited but at least they can't be sent halfway across the country in a trade (in the WHL).

I can understand the frustration, but that kid will regret it. Not because it will affect his hockey future (maybe it will), but because of the feeling he will have.

I was once one of 7 guys that showed up for a game on a friday night. Everyone had excuses for not being there, most of which I knew were BS as there was a party that night a bunch elected to go to. We were down 6-0 after 2 periods and I did the same thing. We walked into the dressing room and I ripped off my gear and left. As soon as I got home and settled down I felt like crap. Because it wasn't the guys that weren't there I quit on. It was the other 6 guys that showed up. I apologized to the boys that were there and the coaches reluctantly took my letter from me, but I understood it. Just a s*** feeling that I don't recommend.
