I once saw rick tabaracci skate out to the hash marks to make a save. that was a pretty controversial decision imo.

I like the way Montoya plays... He'd make a great UFA signing for the Flames.

Kidd and Tabaracci is the one I remember the most.

Dave King should have started Tabby in Game 7 against San Jose.

Not having a reliable backup for Kipper is pretty much the only one I can think of. Sutter saw fit to have Kipper carry the load year after year and took a gamble that he wouldn't get injured. Luckily for the team he only ever got injured in his first and last season. Having an adequate backup would have garnered this team more wins during the regular season, meaning possible home ice advantage in the playoffs. Toskala, Joseph, etc just didn't cut it.

Dave King riding the flopper Trevor Kidd in the playoffs when Tabaracci was the far better option will always drive me crazy.

Kidd was terrible.

I wonder why the Flames never kept Trefoliv as IIRC he came in on multiple separate occasions and saved the day

Am I misremembering something? Joseph was great as a Flame. His performance in game 3 against San Jose even made the press question if should have started game 4.

Don Edwards vs Reggie Lemelin : Flames traded some draft picks for former Vezina trophy winner Don Edwards from Buffalo along with D Ritchie Dunn. Edwards was supposed to the starting goaltender the Flames was looking for years but he often found himself backing up Reggie Lemelin instead of being a go-to-guy.

Reggie Lemelin vs Mike Vernon : Young Mikey took the starting job from Rejean in 85-86 playoff where they ended up going to Stanley Cup Final losing to Montreal Canadiens. Rookie Vernon started 22 playoff games including the Stanley Cup while Lemelin, a starter in the regular season only played 3 games.

Honestly, anytime Kipper had a bad game and the backup put up a good one.

Pretty much everything to do with Trevor Kidd. They drafted him instead of Brodeur then traded Vernon because they thought Kidd was starter material. Then in the 1995 playoffs Kidd shows he is the least clutch goalie in Flames history getting outplayed by both Irbe and Flarrety but for some reason plays in all 7 games of the series. It is still hard to believe the Flames scored 35 (!!!) goals in a playoff series and lost. Finally the next season they put Tabaracci in net after Kidd lays an even bigger egg in Chicago but by then it is far too late.

The media (specifically Francis, iirc) tried to invent a controversy the year we signed Curtis Joseph late in the year and he came in and won a playoff game in relief of Kipper. Probably the closest the Flame have come to an actual goaltending controversy since the Don Edwards/Reggie Lemelin days.

Pavelec as a starter:

2009-10 SP 0.906
2010-11 SP 0.914
2011-12 SP 0.906
2012-13 SP 0.905
2013-14 SP 0.902

he keeps getting worse. Possibly the worst starting goalie in the NHL.

Comparing the two for this year:

Pavelec: 20-24-5 GAA=2.98 SP=0.902
Montoya: 10-4-3 GAA=2.17 SP=0.926

The numbers speak for themselves. Additionally, every time the Jets play a top team (usually on the road), Montoya will get the start. Why start your backup against teams like Chicago, San Jose, Colorado, Montreal, Pittsburgh, and Boston, while your starter plays the easy home games against teams like the Islanders, Panthers, Oilers, Hurricanes, Nashville, etc?

In terms of actually providing meaningful saves at key times, yes, Kidd was far worse than Tabaracci.

And get out of here with that nickname. That has, and always will, belong to "Red Light" Racicot.

You didn't live in Winnipeg in the early 90's. We called him "Red Light Rick." In the 1991-92 season, Bob Essensa had his best season in the NHL. He was a Vezina trophy finalist. So what do the Jets do? They bench Essensa, and give every single start to Tabaracci, who GM Mike Smith thought was a future superstar goalie.

Tabs did well for the first 4 games, as he helped lift the Jets to a 3-1 series lead, before imploding and allowing 20 goals in his last 3 games. Tabs never did live that series down in Winnipeg, and was dealt to Washington.

Surprisingly, he did his best work for the Flames a few years later, but never turned into the superstar goalie Mike Smith had hoped for.
