Never knew he had any connections or even insight into the game. I guess the CBC wants a new image going into their new deal, but I hope this is just the first step. An almost complete overhaul of both the CBC and Sportsnet crews is what I am hoping for. There are very few commentators I hope they keep around long-term (Friedman, Hughson, Petrillo, Oake, Hrudy, Simpson, Millen, and Ball I guess for CBC). I can't really find anyone worth keeping on Sportsnet though, Millard is decent, but TSN still offers far better analysts. Some of their play-by-play guys and interviewers are fine, but I honestly don't like any of their in-studio analysts or commentators.

Is this Sportsnet doing this? or CBC? Either way, doesn't matter to me.

It's Rogers/Sportsnet that's in control of this. From what I understand, all production will be done under the Sportsnet brand, but games will still be shown on CBC for the next four years; but not as a CBC production.
Wow that's actually pretty cool. I had a chance to meet George back in college during a Much Music tour, really down to earth guy. Talked to our group, answered our questions, seemed genuinely interested in talking to us, definitely wasn't a meet/greet snap a photo and I'm out kinda thing.
If McLean is still around you'd have to think he'll be doing Coaches Corner with Cherry... can't imagine a new host for that at age 80 or whatever Cherry is.
Interesting move but I like it - Strombo is a fantastic interviewer.
The strength of HNiC is has been it's coverage of the more sentimental side of the game in Canada and in the past few years they've been getting away from that and moving towards over-analysis much like TSN. The return to a focus on storytelling should be a good move.
Dude when it comes to the Canucks, it could be a team of Adolf Hitler, Pol Pot, Augusto Pinochet, Josef Stalin and Kim Jong Il and if one of them scores against the Canucks you take it.

Besides the @strombo news, I'm told there will be a blood lettering at CBC sports in the coming days

He's a cool guy to have, but I hope he doesn't bring politics into the broadcast. The one thing I dislike about the CBC broadcasts are the endless tributes to the troops and whatnot. It's not a PC thing to say, and I do respect those who've done well for the country, but keep police officers, musicians and whatnot out of the broadcast. It's shoved down our throats every week. I want an escape from reality and that's what sports is all about. Strombo does nothing to change that if I'm guessing from his guests on his show. Stick to the game.
I hope George has decent hockey knowledge. If not, if he's interviewing someone like Gary Bettman, he'd get destroyed.
Duno if this'll assuage any of your worries, but Strombomopolis has actually interviewed Bettman before.

There's also YouTube vids of him interviewing Alex Ovechkin, Sean Avery, Dion Phaneuf, Brian Burke, Don Cherry... probably more (though I'm a bit lazy to go searching for all their vids at the moment).
