in fairness to the novice refs they are still learning the game as well - it is tough to be a young ref, with no apparent back up to deal with a coach who may be standing on the bench and towering over you and explaining why you made a call.

Looks like the kid that went down was the one who started it with the slash. Stupid kid.

I have to say, as someone who has coached a lot of youth sports, its part of the coach's job to step in and be the calm voice of reason and not be just another ape flinging feces.

absolutely. The other coach and I notice mistakes all the time, but these kids need to be given some rope as they're learning the game as well. I really liked it early in the season when I saw an older guy on the ice with them as a mentor. We have a few really sharp refs in our area.

That theory works well in a game like hockey.

but when your coaching football, and you have a head coach, coordinators (2 to 3) position coaches (3 -6)

You might have a majority of level headed coaches and one ape flinging feces.

And if you have one, it doesn't take much to rile up the others.

And at a amateur level of football there aren't a lot of refs in the funnel and the ones who are there at some point get brutal.

Me - "Excuse me kind sir, but number 76 on the opposing team is illegally dancing with our defensive tackle, I was wondering if per chance you could keep a closer eye on this grievous injustice?"

Ref - "That's not holding"

Me - "Oh kind ad mighty official, the hands of that offensive lineman are to the outside of the pads, by any rules including the Westminster guide on good sports man ship that is indeed holding"

Ref - "Nah, I don't see it that way"

Me - "Hulk Smash"

I disagree.

There is no reason for a coach to act like a jackass.

If it was my son who hit him, he'd still be laying on the ice ;-)

At blackfoot we've even stopped practicing with pucks, who needs em (we can't score anyways).

I find that every team has a kid or two that gets carted off every period it seems and others that can go all season without a bruise.

It's tough not to get emotionally involved in your kids activities, but no excuse for the behaviour reported here.

The kid ran at mine from quite a ways away (in novice so there is no hitting). My kid had the puck. All I could see was legs laying on the ice not moving and I freaked.

In my emotional daze I didn't realize it was the hitting kid who was hurt and my kid had already skated away. To follow it up the ref is now leading my kid to the penalty box. Getting a penalty. Coaches argued and the 12 year old ref changed his mind. The online course did not prepare me for that.

The online course they make parents take is just embarrassingly bad. They need to put more emphasis that you will likely see your kid get hurt at the hands of another kid and to be prepared for that. There will be brutal calls and your kids will be very disappointed after a game because of missed calls. The refs are just as bad at reffing at that age as your kid is at playing hockey. Expect terrible, terrible reffing because they have to learn somewhere.

The course should also tell that Blackfoot is known as the dirtiest team in Calgary, everyone you will ever talk to will agree, right firebug? I didn't know that before.

“When I go to an event and there are a bunch of older people around, I ask them: ‘Why do you play old-timers hockey?’ They say, ‘to have fun.’ I say, ‘Really. OK, then why can’t every kid playing minor hockey or minor baseball or minor soccer be having fun every time he or she goes out to play?’ That should be our goal.

"“I look back at my minor hockey days and those are my fondest memories – playing with my buddies. My dad’s advice to me was, ‘go out and have fun and see what happens’ – and that’s the way it should be."

As a. Lachlan, I firmly believe that I should be leading and example and always be calm, cool and collected. I always feel that the kids will easily feed off of negative emotion.

Our team did not get the memo from Blackfoot about the change in practice routine. We are still using pucks.

Funny, that is the second time in a week I have heard about blackfoot's dirty reputation. If that is true I'd like to see where that came from, because none of the teams I have been involved with have played on the edge of the rule book.....

My uncle broke a guys arm at his son's hockey game, he claimed it was an accident when he knocked the guy down the stairs. My cousin did not see it happen, nor did his teammate Vincent Lecavalier.

Kind of a pathetic story...

"I got it all on f@cken' camcorder man!"

Ha ha ha. What a great line from a great lady.

I didn't think I played at a high enough level for adults to take it seriously enough to get violent, but cripes, I could skate (and slash) better than those kids. Is violence creeping into the house leagues now?

I wonder if it would have been different if everyone had a ####in' camcorder in those days.

This seemed like a little more complicated situation than others. As idiotic as the women sounds, it sounds like her beef is with the ref getting a little too aggressive at manhandling the kids. Taken on its own, I would have given the ref the benefit of the doubt that he just fell on the kid. But with the context of them already being upset that ref was roughing up the kids, it might have been too aggressive a move on the kid. Doesn't excuse the parents and coaches acting like idiots, but a little different than parents just taking the game too seriously.
