If you really want to find out, download ethereal and find out how long it takes before you see a packet on known worm ports. Usually doesn't take very long.

The point being that putting an unpatched machine without good protection onto the Internet means you've got a good chance of being hacked within a very short timespan.

I can attest to that. I have tried to install (legally purchased) XP on my home computer and I got worms the second I ran Windows XP, I couldn't even get to the windows page to download the update. My computer kept shutting down every minute.

My dad has to get me a copy of the updates on CD so I can re-install it again.

Is your life an open book? Do you want the entire world to see the contents of your computer? There's nothing that you wouldn't want anyone to know about you? If not, then what are you hiding?

Wow, you really thought out that tidbit. The question I ask myself, is do I trust unquestioningly Microsoft and their employees? I don't and it is more then fair to question their motives.

In matters of privacy I wouldn't appreciate movie cameras in my house although these have become common in public areas. But like you say you "don't have anything to hide".

MICROSOFT'S bid to refuse access to updated versions of Windows has been foiled by hackers.
The Vole had demanded that those who wanted Windows updates, other than security improvements, had to download an Active X program that sniffed their operating system to see if their OS had been pirated.

It took about 24 hours for hackers to come up with a solution involving IE script, the hackers claim.
