Boys will be boys, but in this era of social media nothing goes unreported - let's wait before we make any hasty judgements on Kulak's character. Not great to see, but hopefully he simply learns from it. (Not to mention, innocent until proven guilty).

Really like this kid as a prospect (as I've noted on many occasion) - hope he still proves me right!

There is always more to this than we're told. Give the kid a break and don't convict him in the court of public opinion.

Sounds like a fight at a house party. Judgement reserved until full details escape, but kids that age sometimes get into scraps at house parties. Not justifying it, and depending on the circumstance and what he actually did the fact that college age kids sometimes get into scraps doesn't make it ok......but doesn't necessarily mean he lacks character, could mean he just needs to mature some.

1 Teenager - check
2 High Profile - check
3 House party with booze - check

1+2+3 = recipe for something to happen.

I am sure these things happen much more often than we hear about with other teams as well. I bet 50% of CP was involved in some sort of altercation at a house party in their teenage years. The only difference is a drafted athlete is a easier target if your the media. For all we know some guy punched a girl and without thinking these guys stepped in.

Judgement reserved until more information comes out

Give one guy the benefit of due process before you completely crap on him ffs. I am willing to crap all over him if it is proven that he is a db but c'mon.

And yeah, I know from experience. Assault causing bodily harm can be big guy hits harder than little guy and big guy is an NHL draft pick so bingo.
That's CP, well at least a particular chunk of the regular personalities. Misinterpereting excerpts, jumping to conclusions and mercilessly ripping people apart is pretty much their MO.

Not exactly an enormous sample, but 3 incidents in the last 3 years is enough of a pattern to raise some eyebrows.
Out of curiosity, where are you going with that thought?

As I asked earlier when Bigdog claimed people should be banned from the thread for crapping on him who is ripping him apart in this thread?

Calgary Herald
Quote:
Calgary Flames prospect Brett Kulak is facing assault charges stemming from a summertime house party in Delta, B.C.

Kulak, 19, has been charged with assault causing bodily harm and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.

Jackson Houck, another player with the Vancouver Giants of Western Hockey League, is being charged with assault causing bodily harm. Houck is a draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers.

Kulak, the Giants’ leading scorer, goes to court Nov. 20.

Giants owner Ron Toigo released a statement Saturday: “We cannot comment on the charges or the likely outcome at this time, and hopefully this will all be behind us after that court date. What we can say is that our players are held to a higher standard and, for the most part, live up to that. This is the first instance that we have had a player have to go to court and that is unfortunate.

“Both Jackson and Brett have been, and are, exceptional people . . . it is unfortunate that one negative incident gets the attention instead of all the good things that have been done.”

The Flames selected Kulak, a defenceman, in the fourth round in the 2012 National Hockey League draft.

Not too far. I'm firmly in the 'coincidence' camp. Still, when you reflect back and take notice of the occurrences within that set time period it isn't hard to see why some people generalize and question the pattern.

We all make mistakes. Especially teenage boys when booze is involved. It doesn't mean you are a bad character that will never grow up and mature- they are still kids.

Hmm sounds like the Flames didn't know about Kulak's legal problems until today:
Quote:
Flames general manager Jay Feaster’s statement Sunday: “We were just made aware that Brett has been charged with assault and uttering threats as the result of an incident this past August in Delta, B.C. We have discussed the matter with Brett and are continuing to acquire additional information. While we don’t condone the behaviour associated with these charges, the Calgary Flames organization continues to support Brett as he moves through the legal process and we learn more about the incident. As the matter is before the courts in B.C., we are limited in the information we can publicly discuss and are unable to comment any further on the incident at this time.”

For me this a file under dont care. Kids in the off season got in a fight.

Curious that it tooked months to charge them or did it just take months for the media to find out?

Either way as long as its just a fight I dont particularly care.

Put me in the "I am concerned" camp. "Maturity" and how a prospect carries himself is a big part of what teams define as "character". Fair or not, NHL prospects and players are expected to be mature and carry themselves like professionals. They are suppose to act like public figures and not regular kids.

With that said. Nobody has been convicted yet and as far as I am aware, nobody has even been charged yet. But I would surely not dismiss this as nothing because if charged, assault causing bodily harm is a serious charge.

Where do you get the impression they were not charged?

The two articles posted in this thread says Kulak have been charged. Jay Feaster's statement says Kulak has been charged. The Giants' owner's statement says Kulak has been charged.

Sorry. My mistake. I was having a brain fart there. Doesn't change my point. These are serious charges and I'm concerned rather than dismissive of this as a boys will be boys thing.

I think the gist of his post saying something like 'we don't know exactly what happened, so let's wait until the whole story comes out before passing judgement.' Was what I was agreeing with. I don't know if anyone crapped on the kid, but I'm going to reserve my judgement until the real story comes out.

That is pretty much what everyone that posted before him said as well though. So who needs to be banned from the thread as he said?
