I immediately saw this as Pmall 2.0

Exactly what it looks like.
Don't know if Calgary has the Asian population to support something like that though. Markham alone has a bigger Chinese population than Calgary.

I was thinking the same thing.
75% of the stores will probably sell cheap cell phone accessory knockoffs.

Not to mention it's kinda far out there at the moment. Lack of transit for a long while isn't going to help.

I think it'd be kind of neat for the Calgary area to have one of those, but I agree that I do question how successful it will be given Calgary's Chinese population. Who knows, maybe it'll attract people from Edmonton too. Not sure if they'd drive 3 hours just to go to this type of mall though.

I saw new malls like this in Turkey as well. I figured they were based on the middle eastern bazaar concept. They make them look a lor more organic there though, and less sterile.

Reminds me of the the Victoria Market in Melbourne in some ways.
That said, from my architectural standpoint, it's terrible and the design is extremely cheesy and will date itself very fast.

It doesn't have to be Asian specific, it's not like it's inside Chinatown or the NE...
I see this as a retail opportunity for small home businesses and to encourage entrepreneurship. Something that Calgary has lacked since, well forever?

Last I remembered, malls here all have the exact same stores. Rent is crazy high at say Market/Chinook and even then, it's rare to even find an empty space available there. Cheesy as this new "mall" might seem, all someone really need is inventory and you're pretty much in business.

You can kick Jose Bautista in the nuts for Booster juice.
But i like this mall concept. I have a distributor from China who can give me all these cool 3-D pictures of Jesus and the last supper and Bruce Lee to sell.

I actually don't think the location is that bad. Considering most Chinese people live in the north, it's not really that long a drive. As long as there's parking, most Asians like to drive anyways.
Chinatown has been in the dumps for a few years now. A lot of Chinese don't go down there much anymore because they don't like to find parking, and walking outside, especially in the winter. They like going to a mall with parking lots. I think that's the reason why Chinatowns in Vancouver and Toronto are slowly declining as well. They go to the Yohan Centres and Pacific Malls.

Similar to Eau Claire Market I think it is an interesting idea/concept but will fall victim to a poor strategy/implementation.
