Glad he's back for the sake of fans everywhere, but tired of the annual dance.

I get what you're saying, but he never got away considering we never had him to begin with.
Selanne might have played a few seasons here before getting sold off like the other stars we had at the time.

I remember the day the Flames submitted an offer sheet to draftee Selanne when was a Winnipeg Jet.
1992 – Teemu Selanne (Winnipeg) – Offer Sheet from Flames
Quote:
The Flames offered the Finnish Flash a three-year deal at $400,000 per season, plus a $1.5MM signing bonus, as reported by the Winnipeg Free Press. Keep in mind, in 1992, that was a huge contract. Wayne Gretzky was the highest-paid player at $3MM, leading scorer Mario Lemieux was bringing home $2.3MM, and Norris-trophy-winning defenseman Brian Leetch was earning a whopping $250,000.
The Jets quickly matched the contract; it’s a good thing they did, since Selanne would go on to score a rookie-record 76 goals the following season.

Would have liked to see CP's reaction to that offer sheet.

its not an annual dance. It's not like he's Mats Sundin or LeBron James making a side show of things. What Selanne has done over the last few years is genius. Sign one year deals, knowing full well he'll either be a Duck the following season or be retired. He's probably made an extra 10-12 million over the last 5 years by only signing one year deals. Do you think anyone would have given a 38 year old Selanne 20.75 mil over 5 years? That GM would have been massacred. The only way it would save grace was if it was hugely front-weighted, and even then it would have been ridiculous.
He's also ageless which helps.

Yeah, it's been an annual dance the last few off seasons.

Well, nobody is complaining about those contracts, so it's been fair both ways.

Oh I completely agree. I'm just saying that at 38, if he had signed a multi year deal for 5 years (ridiculous given his age already), he would have made a hell of a lot less money.
And I disagree that its any sort of dance. I think it's pretty obvious that he'll either play for the Ducks or retire, and given his age, 1 year deals are probably all him, his agent or the Ducks want. There's no mystery or song and dance he gives. At 43 and being one of the most incredible players ever, I think he's earned a couple months to decide whether or not he can still play.

Or if he still wants to. If I was a 43 year old millionaire I'd probably be sipping margaritas on a beach somewhere.

I'll just say I'm glad he's confirmed this is his final season so we don't need to do the "Will he or won't he retire?" dance next season.

You're kidding right? My sarcasm detector is in the shop being vacuumed.
I think this is his 2nd or 3rd 'final season' as it is. If he can play again the year after then he probably will.
I love the fact that he felt he owed the fans a video explanation. For that alone he gets an easy free-pass from me.

This whole dance is just frenzied curiosity by the fans and the media. It's only natural that Selanne takes a couple months to decide what to do at this point of his career and natural for the the Ducks to keep a close eye on things.

And its always easy. There will always be room for Selanne because he isnt a prima donna that will want a multi-year contract for maximum dollars or anything stupid like that, its reasonable one-year deals.
Its not like the entire organization is being handcuffed while awaiting his decision with baited breath. Hes not the superstar that the team cant live without anymore.

Teemu's "One More Year!" act is starting to feel like KISS "farewell" tours... I'm ok with this.

I wouldn't call it an "annual dance", because the truth is, he wants to play, but why it takes a while is that he needs to check his condition and also have a chat with the GM & Coach about his role. He won't sign if he has to play 4th line minutes, and like he said earlier this summer: " I want to be sure I get the playing time I deserve. I'm also fine if there is younger guys getting ahead of me, but I hope it's only because they play better than me".
He's a lock on the Olympic team if he's not injured, btw.

If my teams all-time greatest player still wants to play and actually contribute and settle for 2 million? He can take all the time he wants to. In an era where many mediocre players are getting more then 2 million a year he will be one of the best contracts this year.
And he's up there but I would take Lidstrom and Jagr over Teemu easily.

I'm just happy to once again be able to say that I am still not older than the oldest active NHL player.
