Good term and cap hit for our #1 centre. Love these Jet threads. It goes from "Jets can't keep their guys" to "overpayment Winnipeg sucks". It's a good deal for both sides for a guy who's close to being on UFA deals.

Not sure why so many people always cry about the Winnipeg comments and defend the city.
Fact of the matter, Winnipeg is probably the least desirable NHL city (maybe worse than Edmonton). The Jets will always have trouble attracting and retaining players at bargain prices.
Nobody complains when this board rags on Edmonton for being a dump. That's because it's true.
So is Winnipeg.

Term is a bit risky considering injury history, and the AAV seems kinda high to me- but, what do I know...

You could say he's getting paid a little too much.

It's because this is a Flames board. Edmonton is going to be called a dump no matter what.

Winnipeg is locking up the core of the team and results are required immediately. Enstrom, Kane, Ladd, Little, Buff soon to be Wheeler and Bogosian. They also have 2 very intriguing prospects ready to make the show in Schiefele and Trouba. They have a decent starting goalie and reasonable support pieces in Jokinen, Frolik, Setoguchi. The time for the Jets starts now. For the most part I see Chevy as a GM who is similar to Mike Gillis. He has done a nice job retaining the pieces that he inherited but outside some tweaks he hasn't made any bold moves. The fans were okay with it for 2 years but they will want results next season. It is pretty clear Winnipeg believes in their current core but now is the time to get over the hump and make the playoffs. I think they have a nice top 9 and good D with a decent goalie. The jets are a playoff contender in the west for sure I think they easily have the size to match up physically against any team

big time overpayment. winnipeg needs to overpay to attract players in that market. See Jokinen.

They have some nice pieces in place, but I think they have a very flawed roster. They couldn't make the playoffs while playing in the weak SE division and by no means is Pavelec a good goalie, his sv% the past 2 seasons rank well below average goalie rankings. That contract is by true means of 'paying for potential' and right now he hasn't lived up to it. When I look at the Jets roster, I think of them as a well below average team right now and in the future. Even worse now since they let go off Burmistrov.

Just wondering why it's a big time overpayment?

Has only hit 50 points once, though was on a 50+pt pace last season. I'd say it's a slight overpayment but wouldn't be concerned about it personally.

It seems like a lot of posters think its still 2008 when they look at signings happening going into the 2013/14 season. It seems that the rare contract signed gets called fair and the remaining 95% get called as overpayment by posters.
The landscape has changed. $5 million isnt what it used to be and isnt only for top tier players anymore. A team may sign one or two cap friednly contracts but youre not going to build a roster of $3 million 3 year contracts.

Little at 4.7 matches up really really well with Jokinen at 4.5.
I doubt the Jets will ever again throw money away on over priced UFA's.
As for their bargain basement #2 centre Schieffle had 41 pts in 21 games in the OHLA playoffs after a 39 goal 78 pts in 45 games in the regular season.
He is in year #1 of 3 in his ELC at 1.5M.
That is how really good rosters are built.
It will be interesting to see how he compares over the years to Baertschi who has burned off year one of his ELC last year.

They were flawed last year much the same way the 2009-09 Flames were flawed. That was the best line-up the Flames have put together since Gilmour and they almost missed the playoffs and got handled in the 1st round.
Regehr, Langkow, Bourque taking injury time off kinda flawed the roster.
The Jets top 2 d men Enstrom and Bogosian were injured for a lot of the season. Hainsey who is a UFA that no one apparently wants was putting in 23 minutes a game as the Jets version of Anders Erickson.....

I know some Jets fans who were very pleased with Hainsey last year. I truly wonder why he is getting no interest and if the reason is due to his stance as a hardliner for the NHLPA during the lockout. Chris Campoli still can't find a job because of that.
I know neither are great Dmen but at minimum salary both are good enough to play in the NHL
