Don't forget Joe Nieuwendyk won two more cups after he left.

It reminds me of the time I was on a hike with some local inner city children and their farm animals (it's like 4H club except with hiking and mountain climbing). We were about three hours into a nine hour hike, when suddenly I felt a sharp pain in my chest.

I went briefly to one knee as pain radiated down my left arm and into my jaw. The children stopped and looked at me. "Are you okay?" one little sprite of a girl asked as she struggled to keep her llama form falling off a rocky outcropping. "Yeah, you look pale and are sweating a lot," said a small boy carrying his duck in a sack.

Now, I could have given in and just called off the hike. A helicopter could have whisked me away to the finest available hospital with one simple phone call. But I wouldn't allow it. But I'm a man. I don't let no pain or medical condition get in the way of MY farm animal hikes. "I'm... fine," I gasped, getting to my feet. I pulled on the rope that my muskox was attached to and directed the kids to gather their livestock and continue on. There was a lesson to be taught, and I intended to teach it.

We hiked the next six hours with me gasping for breath and almost passing out several times form the pain. Each step was agony. I had to carry the muskox for seventeen miles when it sprained an ankle. But I endured. There was an incident with a pig headbutting someone's goose, but that's to be expected. The rest is a blur, really. One child tried to call 9-1-1, but I threw her phone in the lake.

Finally, we reached our destination. I was dead set against even bothering with the hospital, but one of the children insisted when it looked like her emu was going to cry. It really is a strange club, to be honest.

Turns out over 40% of my heart died. The doctor said it was from "atherosclerosis" and "lack of immediate medical attention", but I like to think it was actually from pride: the pride of knowing I toughed it out against all odds, and showed all those kids and their animals the true meaning of hikes with livestock (and Christmas).

I also showed them what it takes to be a man. Except the girls. I guess I showed them what it takes to be a real woman, maybe? The point it, I am probably the best role model those poor kids could ever have. Except maybe for Darryl Sutter. That man is one tough SOB.

Front runner for post of the year.

Its not about proving himself to his players, its a believing you aren't a pansy. Somewhat related, a few years ago, I saw Brian Sutter (he had just been fired from the Flames) at the Calgary Stampede and was stuck in traffic. I got to talk to him a bit, and while talking, he noticed the soles of his boots were starting to rip off or something and something was bent. A normal person would probably just get a new pair of shoes, but instead he goes to the back of his truck, digs up a old hammer and starts hammering his boots back together. There was also that story of Darryl taking that puck to the face while coaching, the only reason he didn't stay was cause he didn't want his (grandchildren?) to see.... but wanted to keep doing his job and see it to completion.

Sutter's are tough, in a way not many people understand. I probably wouldn't have got the surgery, but in Darryl's eyes, he saw that he was committed to doing a job and didn't want to let weakness prevent him from it. Probably not the smartest thing, but really tells you the loyalty and seriousness he has to his job... again something I'm not sure that, by comparison, our organization has (for better or for worse, and not a lot of organizations) and its something I would love to see.

This isn't that big of a story, depending on the hernia's he had. I had double hernia surgery back in high school; that was delayed till end of hockey season so I wouldn't miss half my season recovering, and it really wasn't bad. Just had to push the hernia's back in after every shift, but it's not like they really hurt much. If his were anything like mine, coaching for a few months with them would be nothing.

and what's sutter's alternative? stop coaching his nhl club during the playoffs while he gets fairly routine surgery.
in some situations you just have to grin and bear it, he gutted it out, give the devil his due.

By all that you hold dear on this good earth, I bid you stand, Men of the West!
Welcome back, you glorious insane bast#rd.

Chuck Norris could learn a thing or two in toughness from the Sutter clan.

SOOO many of you people are blowing this out of proportion...
He had some MINOR hernia, he was not coaching with a 90% blocked RCA heart. You guys need some perspective BADLY.

Good for daryl for not wanting to take "weeks off" for recovery for day surgery when he could coach.

My god you guys are making day surgery into life or death surgery for some reason. CALM DOWN!!!!!!

Here I was thinking this was going to be related to him being in Calgary and carrying 5 old ladies out of a flooding building. Instead I get a story on a stubborn (perhaps stupid) old man ignoring medical ailments that are severe enough to require surgury.

Sorry his teachings are lost on me here.

Or get it done before the lockout when he already knew he needed it.

top Darryl Sutter quotes from the last year

http://lakingsinsider.com/2013/06/18...l-sutter-2013/

Quote:
On whether there’s “any update on Sutter”:
“He’s fine. He’s doing an interview right now. [Will he play in Game 3?] No, I won’t be playing. I’m not available.”
-A nervous representative of a network affiliate used “Sutter” instead of “Stoll” and accidentally created a top-5 quote of the year.
Quote:
On Miikka Kiprusoff being “a man of few words”:
“Yeah. That’s why we had such a good relationship.”
Quote:
On whether Drew Doughty should pick his spots on when attempting to use the impressive “one-man breakout” he used in the first period of a win over Phoenix:
“Well, if you do that all the time, you’re not a very good player. You’re Brian Campbell in Florida. You’ll be minus-20 and we’ll see you on the highlights. But you’re on a bad team, and you’re a high-minus player. So this is not a movie about a star, right?”
