Nothing wrong with a tie game after five minutes of OT
Even less wrong with a tie game after 10 minutes of OT.

The NHL will never go back to ties on Bettman's watch. I know it's been mentioned a million times but if there was and additional 5 minutes of 3 on 3 prior to the shootout, very few games would be decided by a shootout. I hate that a team's playoff chances are affected by a gimmick.
3 on 3 might be more of a gimmick than the shootout.

Yes, there is. Teams play for them. Because a point is awarded it is better to play conservative and get that point than open up, assume risk, and play aggressively for the win.
The only thing that will work to eliminate this shoot out and tie garbage is to eliminate the loser points. Two points for a regulation win. One point for an OT win. Zero points for anything else. You only get rewarded for winning, and rewarded the most for winning in regulation. Get rid of the phony points for almost being competitive. The NHL won't do this though. They love the phony equality they have built into the system.
The other way to redo points is make wins progressively less valuable but losses always worth 0.
3pts reg win, 2 pts OT win 1 pt shoot out win 0 points loss. I think that going giving any points to shoot out losses or ot losses encourages teams playing to ensure thy get the point.
I still vote for straight wins/losses, either you win or you lose, no middle ground. Like every other sport in the world has (save soccer and once every ~5 years in the NFL)

There is a fundamental philosophical difference between knock-out games and league games.
About the only sports that I have encountered that operate a league based system that do not recognise tied games are US centric.
Of course if you really want to mess with your head - Cricket has 4 results win, loss, tie and draw
Hold the phones, I did some more research and found that the Canes have only played in 2 SO games this season and went 2-for-4 in SO attempts. (so it looks like we will share the "record" unless Carolina goes to SO tomorrow). Looks like every other team has scored at least 3 SO goals this year.
Tampa Bay also scored only 2 SO goals this year.
The NHL just published some great shootout statistics for both the 2012/2013 season and all-time:
While nearly 50% on the road, Calgary has really struggled in the SO at the Dome. Here are some all-time stats for the Flames on home ice:
- Only 6 SO home games won which is dead last in the league (while losing 21).
- 2nd last in home SO save percentage at 56% (ahead of only Philly at 52)
- Dead last in home SO goals scored (by a wide margin) with only 15
- League-worst in home shooting percentage at only 18%
- Perhaps fortunately for the Flames, they've also participated in the fewest home games decided by shootout
I'd be curious to see if the fans of teams that have been effective in the shootout (NJ, Pens, NYR) would also like to see it gone.

Going to an average or 25 games per season for the last decade, I have learned to tune out shootouts.
15 home goals is ridiculous, that's an average of 2 per season...and less than 1 win per season...but there ends up only being 4 or 5 games per season.
I seriously can't recall the last home shootout win. Off the top of my head, I can remember two home shootouts that stick out...preseason when Fleury scored the winner and when Bertuzzi did a spin-o-rama on Luongo but hit the post.
I have a pretty good memory, but the bank is empty when trying to recall shooutout highlights from the 'Dome.
A quick search and found one of the rare 6 home wins and 15 goals....with the smooth soothing Sportsnet voice of Roger Millions on the call....over 5 years ago.
Here's Kipper's first ever...some emotion from Kipper, and a Brad Stuart and Andrei Zyuzin sighting! Iginla with the winner. 6 years ago.
Here's the 3rd win...vs Columbus. Bertuzzi with a sweet move and some sweet hands for the winner.
So there's, on video, half the Flames shootout wins at home, and 3 of the 15 goals, since October 2005. Not surprising then that I don't recall the last one or many of them.
3 on 3 is as far from the normal game and as bad as the shootout, IMO.
I wouldn't know how to go about finding this statistic, but I'd guess that penalty shots are more common than stretches of 3 on 3 hockey during the course of a "normal" games.
I've always thought that a good compromise would been to allow the game to end in a tie for points purposes, but then have a shootout that would be used to give teams tie-breaker points. That way someone comes out of the game as the winner, but it doesn't affect the standings unless multiple teams end the season with the same point total.
