The "harm" is that you would burn off one year of a two year deal for only 9 games. Not worth it if that's the case.

CALGARY, AB – The Calgary Flames Hockey Club announced today that they have signed Ben Hanowski from St. Cloud State University to an entry-level contract.
Hanowski, a native of Little Falls, Minnesota, just finished his senior season at St. Cloud State (WCHA) as the Huskies made it to the NCAA Frozen Four before falling to Quinnipiac last night. The Huskies team captain is second in goals with 17 along with 14 assists for 31 points in 37 games this season. Hanowski was an All-WCHA Academic award winner and a WCHA Scholar-Athlete. He was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the third round (63rd overall) in the 2009 NHL Draft.
Contract terms: Two year entry-level contract at $810,000 per season with an average annual value of $925,000.

He's projected to play like Thomas Vanek. I am hoping if he gets a stint with the farm next year and learns the defensive side of teh game he can turn out to be like Ryan Callahan. A Versatile two-way winger with energy, and a born leader.

Vanek? As far as I've seen/read he's projected to be a bottom 6 guy, not a 30 goal scorer.

That might not be a bad thing for a player like Hanowski. He's getting $900,000 a year on his ELC (which is the maximum he could get as a 2009 draft pick). His AHL salary will likely also be the maximum at $67,500.
He isn't likely to get a huge raise on his second contract, and might actually take less for a longer-term or a one-way deal. It might be to the Flames' benefit to burn the first year of his deal this year and make next season his contract year.

he probably just meant his playing style. Vanek is a big body who loves to go to the dirty areas, play in front of the net and go for deflections and rebounds ... Hanowski's style could be similar without having the same skill level

Probably not our next "superstar", but still great to see another young prospect sign a contract!

not that it really matters, but I am curious how the Flames arrive at these numbers. Players drafted in the 2nd round ahead of Hanowski have lower cap hits.
Same with Wotherspoon and Brossoit in comparison to players drafted higher in the same draft

I believe Hanowski had an advantage in negotiating his contract
The Flames would loose a lot of face if one of the prospects that was part of the Iginla trade refused to sign so Hanowski was probably able to leverage some more money out of them
Wotherspoon and Brossoit would have also probably picked much earlier if they fell back to the draft and leveraged that.

NHL Player(s) Comparison: Andrew Brunette, Tomas Vanek
Scouting Combine Performance:
- Sorokin noted: “from what I saw, this is a top character guy. A future leader, and apparently he absolutely destroyed some high school records, so who knows, with a few years in the juniors or NCAA, a solid NHLer could come out of this kid.”
International Tournaments: n/a
ETA = 3 to 4 years
Risk-Reward Analysis: Risk = 4/5 Reward = 4/5
NHL Potential: Offensive, goal-scoring forward
Fantasy Hockey Potential: Offensive = 8/10 Defensive = 5.5/10
Yes, he's maybe nothing more than a bottom 6 player but he does have the offensive know how to score goals through who knows if it will translate into the NHL.
Although, I may have worded it wrong.. projected may not have been the right wording for him.. heh.

Doesn't he become a RFA after that? Wouldn't he just sign a similar contract after that? Maybe a small qualifying raise?

Bottom 6 or not, the Flames are sorely lacking in prospects who exude some of the fearless leader quality that Hanowski seems to have. I'v never seen the guy play outside of the last couple of weeks, but the beard alone says playoff leader.

I like this signing. Character guy who likes to plug away. If we end up with a Hartnell light I will be very happy.
