Especially with a salary cap, NTCs are a negotiating tool that can save a lot of money.
While what you are saying here is true, it doesn't explain how a guy like Sarich is sitting there right now with a full no move clause on a contract he signed after being a regular healthy scratch last year. There is no explanation to how a guy can be a healthy scratch for a team and then have that same team turn around and give him a full NMC. It's absurd and points to reckless, ignorant and outright incompetent managerial skills.

Because we were on his list of teams to go to. They didn't need his consent.

I agree with you at this stage any limited clause won't really matter. All those players would probably be happy to jump ship now, especially to a playoff team.

They could have come into play during the season though.

I don't see the NTCs being any kind of a problem for the Flames going forward, with the exception of the non-NTC with Kipper.

When a team is where the Flames are currently at, players will be a lot more open to the idea of a trade.

I do think the NHL should follow the model of other leagues, that only allow no trade clauses for players that have played at least a certain number of years in the league, and a certain number of years for their current team. I believe it's 4 years with their current team and 8 years in the league in the NBA, and 5 and 10 years in MLB. I don't have a problem with Iginla having a NTC, but it should be reserved for those heart-of-the-franchise guys. For a young player or a new acquisition, it shouldn't be on the table.

But then, the valid counter argument is that nobody is forcing a GM to hand out NTCs/NMCs. True, I just want a CBA that protects us from poor management, because at this point it feels like if the CBA has any loophole that will allow a team to screw themselves over, our management will do their best to find it.

Any time you give a player an NTC or NMC, there needs to be some money saved. Iginla both got paid top dollar and the clause he wanted because he knew we couldn't afford to let him go. He and his agent leveraged the team for everything they could muster to keep him a Flame for as long as possible.

I thought the new CBA has banned NTC or NMC, or am I wrong?

The NMC is a useful tool, but like any other tool, it has to be used correctly. Iggy's was justified. Stajan's is not.

Yeah, if you're not doing NTCs, then you need to give something else in return. All else being equal, no NTC is preferable to NTC (for the club), but the nature of negotiations are such that all else is not equal. Case-by-case is the way to go here. Yeah Iginla's NTC burnt us a bit, but paying him an extra million a year could've burnt us too.

Sure but we can only go so far in regulating incompetence. You can't 100% stop the Flames from being stupid compared to other teams. It's still a competition.

octothorp: the 5-10 rule in baseball isn't even negotiable, it's automatic. So in the example above, Sarich would have one.

FlamesAddiction: yes Flames were giving out NTC and paying max dollars.. just more stupidity.

Completely agreed. Your franchise player should be the only player(s)
