There are currently only three teams worse than the Lightning ... maybe they'll the fold the season and try to draft Jones. Outside of Hedman, they don't have a lot going for them on the blueline.

That's like saying if the Flames had a good goalie they would be in the playoff hunt. There's usually more to the picture than just goaltending like commitment to team defense and overall team play. Sounds like the Lightning have some of the same issues that the Flames currently have in that the offensive players aren't playing a great two way game. That can be corrected but if the players have tuned out the coach then you have to bring in one that can get the team to buy back into a team concept.

Well their forward depth wasn't great to begin with and key players suffered injuries. But their defense suck as well. Yzerman's big summer acquisition, Carle, has been pretty bad.
Their AHL coach Jon Cooper should get a look, he has done outstanding work and has made sure that their call-ups are ready for the big show. Ruff should be the obvious candidate though.
I think Cooper will get the job. Too bad. I was hoping the Canucks would pick him up.

Kind of ironic but I heard the Flyers blogger (Tim Panaccio?) on the fan saying that the Flyers miss Carle on the backend. Sometimes players fit with some teams better than others.
I love this. Yzerman was supposed to be such a great choice as GM, yet he has done nothing with all of the talent he was given. Just because he worked for Detroit doesn't mean he is Ken Holland, then he hires an unproven coach to show how he knows so much and they basically #### the bed. Couldn't happen to a better guy.

Do you hate Yzerman, Detroit or just like watching people fail? I'm confused about what is great
I don't hate any of them. I just find it great that everyone was kissing Yzermans butt about being the next great thing and he was basically given the job with no apparent skills to do the job. Fans all think because he played for Detroit, got a cushy position with the team when he retired that he would bring all this great experience to TB. He assumed that he would be groomed in Detroit and then given Hollands job (just like Messier with the Rangers). I assume, but can't prove anything, that Detroit knew he didn't have the GM skills they required and had no impetus to promote him above guys like Jim Nill so he left for the first opportunity he was given.
His draft picks are more off the board than Feasters, has added nothing to the team that wasn't already there and people still assume he is great. It's actually quite funny to me that fans assume because a guy played that he can run an NHL team. I personally would rather see a guy with 20 years of management experience run a team with proper support from hockey people, guys like Ken Holland/Brian Burke/Ray Shero/Peter Chiarelli than Yzerman/Gretzky/Lowe/D. Sutter

Sometimes the methods of junior/AHL coaches don't translate well to the NHL. He's not the first highly touted up and coming coach that didn't work out in the NHL. Don Hay is the poster boy for a great junior hockey coach that simply isn't a good NHL head coach.

Brian Kilrea, Ernie "Punch" McLean, John Brophy are others that fall into this category. I think that career managers do well but career coaches don't. Properly trained managers learn the ins and outs of controling costs and are taught what to look for in players. Career minor league coaches are great at taking young men and molding them into being able to play at the next level but once the cash hits they do not have complete control over the kids.
I think that coaches who played at the NHL level have a better understanding of what it takes to keep the players motivated and are usually better at designing a strategy that they can implement within their teams to get the playes competing. Junior/minor coaches are too used to dictating and adults soon turn them out. There are obvious exceptions to each rule but I think there are more Dave Tippets than there are Ken Hitchcocks in the NHL.
