I went to Coyotes last night. Aside from the $15 cover to get in, it was tons of fun. There was a wide mix of people from old business men and women, to young girls (yes in tight jeans and skirts). DJ Rice you should go to some bars (assuming you are of age) around town and or the beer gardens on the Stampede grounds its a good time.
|
Coyotes? hmm, hope its not anything like the one in the movie "Coyote ugly", 15 yr old girls urgh Trust me, I see enough back home as is lol. If Im old enough to drink back home, Im sure im old enough here haha - im 24.

Go to Cowboys, you won't regret it.
Every tourist to the Stampede should hit Cowboys. There is nothing like it.
Lots of tight jeans, short skirts, tight tops and TONS of silicone! You are going to have a blast.

LOL, ^ well I aint no cowboy nor do I like country music or top 40. Honestly, Im not even into clubs anymore, past that day and age in my life...I dont even drink. But whenever Im in a new city, Im always open to checking out new things.
Dont mean to come off as harsh , just saying as it is.

You don't need to be a cowboy or love country music to have a good time there.
Like someone else said, it's a fairly mixed crowd........well, it was last time I was there.
I don't like country music much at all, but being in a bar like that with girls that nice looking, you tend to not notice the music as much.

I went yesterday to the Stampede, and any girl-watching was instantly vanished the minute I saw most girls must have been under 18. Who the hell wants to see scantily-clad teenie boppers and their ######bag punk boyfriends? BLECH! I'll stick to the Maid, thank you very much!

My advice is read this list of bands
http://calgarystampede.com/events/on...oke_stage.html
and if you like any of them go pay your admission and watch the band. Then walk around the grounds and see what all the hype is about (if there is still hype). If you've never seen it before it might be interesting. But like someone said above, it's really a carnival with rides and rigged games but with a vague western theme.
But... you said you are 24 and you don't drink and don't like country music so the Stampede probably isn't your dream destination. For a rookie it could be fun though.

I guess a good question might be:
What are you looking for to do in the city? What are your interests?
There's lots to do in Calgary besides Stampede, you just have to give us a hint.

I haven't been down to the grounds yet, but I do have a point to make. I'm not sure why you all assume that these girls are under 18. Some girls just look young. For example, my girlfriends and I are 21 & 22 and people always thing we are younger than we are. A few years ago at my old job, I used to work during the days, you wouldn't believe how many people asked if I was old enough to be alone, and I would have to say, 'I am 19 and in my second year of university- I think I'm ok to be alone.'
Thus, my point is: Yes there are many girls who are underage, but there are equally as many who just don't look their age.

Well im most likely here for at least another good week (till the fiance is well enough to travel). I am stuck in a hotel lol no jk. I love to do anything, fun, not too pricey and different. Ive checked out a few places already, but nothing out of the ordinary. Though the hotel is my home right now LOL.

Well, I'm heading up to Grande Prairie and area this week, so for the third year in a row I managed to escape the Stampede. Though, I am half tempted to go take in a rodeo event next weekend (and I have no interest in the rodeo) just to spite the protesters fighting against the rodeo.
As for things to do, depends on your interest.
The Glenbow Museum is apparently pretty good, if that is your thing.
Heritage Park is a decent place for an out of towner to learn about the area's history.
If you like baseball, the Dawgs are playing tomorrow at Foothills, while the Vipers are in town beginning Tuesday. Dont expect large crowds, but it is a nice way to spend an afternoon in the sun away from the Stampede (that and most of the hot girls in tight clothes are over 18. )
Fish Creek Park is usually a nice place to spend a day walking, but recent flooding has left much of it damaged or closed.
You arent in the bar scene, so that isnt much of an option.
Calgary Tower/Olympic museum at it's base.

I guess call me different for a guy my age. Im well past my party years - dont drink, dont smoke (never have), dont go out late at nights much, dont do anything bad really. Even back home, I rarely hit the clubs anymore (only on occasions, birthdays, people leaving etc). More of a stay at home type guy now, since Im soon to be married and have a 10 month old son. How ironic with a username of "DJRICE" haha? Well I used to DJ back in the day, so... music is my thing.
If I were to choose between being shoulder to shoulder in an overly crowded noisy club or a dead and very relaxing park? id take the park no question. Stampede IF I were to do it for say, I wouldnt mind the crowds since its all new to me, and will most likely be a one time affair.
But I'll see. Chances are I most likely wont go, just for the fact its not the time for it with everything going on.

I see our regional ambassadors are pimping the city in the traditional 16 year old fashion....
Silicone aside, there are some attractions you might want to check out.
There is more to the Stampede Grounds than what has been stated. Yes, there are a ton of rides and games there, but there are also events within the Saddledome, Roundup Center and other areas such as Indian Village. It is worth checking out, at least once. And don't be shy of the rodeo, or even the grand stand show...
Although a zoo can be a "been there, seen it" type attraction, Calgary does have a very good one, worth a look.
You might find a day tour of Banff interesting. It is only an hour from here, and if you have never been... it is definitely worth the trip.
And Snakeeye mentioned some noteworthy sites as well: Calgary Tower, Heritage Park, Glenbow Museum, and I might add Canada Olympic Park.
If you want to kill a couple hours and like golf, there is a cool mini-golf at the RCGA range (Glenmore and Deerfoot).
You could also take a walk down the "Red Mile" on 17th Ave SW. Lots of different shops, coffee spots etc. Kensington is another area with some unique stores and such. Stephen Avenue (panhandlers aside) can be an enjoyable walk, with some of the oldest buildings in Calgary residing there.
Another day trip you could take is out to Drumheller (again about an hour and a half away) where you might tour the badlands and check out the Royal Tyrell Museum which has a fantastic dinosaur collection. Again, if you are a golfer, they have a course there where the back nine weaves through the badlands itself. Truly spectacular.
Anyway, hope you can find some things to fill in your time, and that you enjoy your stay here.
Cheers.
