Can Burke even join the Blue Jackets while under contract with the Leafs as a "senior advisor"?

They'd have to seek permission from the Leafs. Leafs made a huge mistake of getting rid of Burke, and Columbus would be smart to get him. I doubt the Leafs would demand much, considering they're cheap and finding a way to have another organization pay him would be something they'd probably like to do.

How funny would it be if they hired Doug MacLean?

Scott Howson to be hired as assistant to GM of the Edmonton Oilers in a few days. Book it.

So you are saying, that if they gave you a 3 year, $30M contract, you'd turn it down? Now you're just being ridiculous.

Took them long enough, he was obviously incompetent.

I can't see JD hiring Burke. Burke seems to be the guy who wants total control whereas JD wants to run things as a team. Maybe JD will take on the title, he's probably running things pretty much anyways.

He really was bad. Almost as bad as the guy he replaced but not quite as MacLean who wrote the book on how not to build a franchise.

Sure they would; they don't play the Jackets this year anyway, and they gain nothing from just holding him in purgatory.

He was infinitely worse than MacLean. I am always surprised by the crap that MacLean gets on here, although I guess he isn't in love with the Flames so people get bitter about that. MacLean's problem was that he never built a team bad enough to get the top picks. When you look back on his picks they weren't bad at the time and rarely was there a better player taken all that close to the guy he chose.

The fact he drafted Nash alone makes him a better GM than Howson.

There is very little skill involved in drafting sure thing #1 overall picks imo. Just like Ray Sherro drafting Crosby; everyone and their mother would have taken Nash, so I wouldn't give MacLean any praise for doing that.

Could JD try to reach across the pond and snag St.Louis' amazing european scout? Kerkalainen? Kerkaleenan?

Don't the Blue Jackets have 3 first rounders in this year's draft?

Given that the draft is only a handful of months away, this is probably your best time to get some new blood in and start building scouts and doing your research. Given how bad Columbus and LA right now, The Blue Jackets might have 2 top ten picks this year.

Outside of Zherdev look at the guys drafted right after them. Not a whole lot of talent there. After Leclaire you have Blackburn, Ruutu, Sjostrom and Hamhuis. Hamhuis good and Ruutu played a lot but not exactly stud picks. Leclaire better than Blackburn or Sjostrom. After Picard Smid, Valabik, Thelen and Tukonen again not a lot of top talent there. Brule was followed by Skille, Setoguchi, Lee and Bourdon. Again not a lot.

I don't think MacLean was great but he isn't as close to being as bad as people made him out to be and a lot of his bad picks were due to not being a lot of great talent available where he picked. I guess he could have gone off the board and picked a guy 5+ spots earlier than he actually went but since 5 other teams passed those guys seems harsh to punish him for that as well.

Nash wasn't the clear number one that year and Maclean traded up to get the first pick so he could get the guy he wanted. The Panthers made the deal because they wanted Bouwmeester anyways and he gave up nothing to make the deal. Seems like that deserves at least a little praise.
