Why do you need a little yellow wristband to donate to cancer research? You want someone to give you a big pat on the back for doing a good thing, or do you want to be trendy and wear one like everyone else?
The wristband is a trend; donating to cancer isn't. TOTF, don't jump on the bandwagon; donate to cancer reserach if you believe in it, but not for a wristband.

FYI, I got mine, along with the rest of my family, after learning my dad had cancer.
We live in a very small town, and I had no idea they were a 'fad' in the least until we went to Vancouver on a trip and saw a lot of them around town. No one I knew had one.
I'm not trying to be trendy, and I'll be damned if I stop wearing mine because people I've never met think I'm trying to be like everyone else.
I'm not.
Also............ I've donated money to the Canadian Cancer Society before........a few times.
But I think I'll keep wearing my wristband anyways.

Well pokemon cards were pretty cool back then. Opening your pack to find a holographic card and crap your pants if its a super good card like Charizard. You show your friends who's there daddy now in becoming the best pokemon master ever.

It's a fad with preteen boys and girls here. I umpire little league baseball and they all have them. I don't recall ever seeing someone at the university wearing them.
Personally I think they're a ######ed fad. If you want to support cancer research give some money. Don't give a quarter to pretend you support cancer when all you're actually doing is trying to look cool. Make an actual monetary donation and don't ask for anything in return.

I'm all for people wanting to be trendy by wearing one. The money they spend is still going to cancer research, regardless of if they care about it, or just to "look cool". I'm sure a lot of these kids have no idea that it's for cancer, and have raised a boatload of money in support. Great "fad" if you ask me, wish all of them were this beneficial.

I don't own one, but personally I don't see the harm in it - even if it is just a fad. It isn't harming anyone so why do people like Evman get upset about the matter. It generates a bit of coin and it raises awareness - so who really cares that some people wear them because it is the cool thing to do at the current time. Seems to me as though some people like Evman worry to much and decide to make a mountain out of a mole hill.

Guys lets remember what this is about, raising awareness, not necessarily funds for Cancer research.
Someone I went to school with was recently diagnosed with Cancer. He's a mere 30 yrs old which really hits home for me. Here is an excerpt from his wife's wrenching tale which has really made me pause and reflect:
Two months ago, Frank and I received some bad news. Frank was diagnosed with a brain tumor after having a spree of headaches which isn’t typical for him. He went through surgery on February 25 where they were able to remove approx 75% of the tumor. The type of tumor that Frank has is not contained and instead grows out into the normal brain matter which makes it impossible to remove the full amount. The surgeon indicated that the tumor was most likely cancerous but that we’d have to wait for the final pathology to determine the actual type and severity.
While Frank was recovering from surgery, we waited and went through our own emotional roller coaster. Finally after two weeks we received the news that this was a grade 4 tumor which is the most aggressive tumor on the grading system of 0-4. As well, the type of cancer is a GBM which is again one of the most aggressive types of brain tumors. The statistics for this type of tumor are not great. There is a mean survival rate of 14 months with <1% living beyond 5 years. All this said, these are just stats and the doctors have encouraged us that Frank’s youth and otherwise healthy body will play a big factor in helping him through the treatments.
[snip]
We’re not sure what the next few years holds for us right now but we are just taking things one day at a time and making the most of it. It has been a challenge to strive for normal within a completely abnormal situation but what can you do. We’ve had several family members purchase some LIVESTRONG bracelets as a visible sign of support which has been a great idea. I encourage you to track a few down if you’d like.
So I choose to wear one not because I think it's cool or I think I'm going to cure cancer with my $10. I think of it more as a symbolic gesture in the hope that people continue to understand the ravages that this disease inflicts on our lives.
EDIT - Even the Lance Armstrong Foundation considers it more of a symbol than a means of direct fundraising: Let's join together to give hope, find courage, and help everyone affected by cancer live strong.

and for anyone who is worried about getting a fake one, make sure it's in it's original nike packaging. It's mostly transparent with a black Nike logo on yellow, says "Livestrong" in yellow as well.

I don't suppose you all realize that the making of these bracelets releases carcinogens which can cause cancer to those in the vicinity. Sure it's safe to wear on your wrist, but you're harming the person who had to make the damn thing. Therein lies my problem with the bracelets.

Do you have a problem with the driving of automobiles, the burning of any fire, the use of paper and plastics of all sorts like the keyboard you are typing on. All of those can potentially result in cancer to those in the vacinity also. Hell I am sure there are studies saying the radiation from a light causes cancer as well. Damn you Edison....

Any reason why you feel it's stupid? Or are you just going to bash me for the fun of it? I do believe that according to the rules on the board, you have to tell me why it's the dumbest statement you've ever read. I'm quite certain I give a shinguard about your opinion anyways.
I don't think it's stupid to not pay $5 for something that's supposed to go to cancer reasearch, that actually causes cancer for those who make it. Yes, I realize that the making of many products causes cancer for those who make it, however, they are not products designed to help end cancer.
As someone who watched my sister die of cancer when she was 22, I absolutely support cancer research. However, a plastic yellow band that causes cancer is not the way I choose to do so. I'd much rather ensure ALL my money goes to cancer research, instead of paying someone else to get cancer.

do you drive a car? It causes carcinogens that cause lung cancer. Maybe you need to start walking everywhere.

No I don't drive. However the point of buying a car is not to end cancer.

Ummm, show me some proof that manufacturing these bracelets causes cancer? Don't just throw out a statemnet like that with nothing to back it up. Where are they made? Where are the lab results from all the people that died/got cancer while manufacturing the bracelets. Do you think Lance Armstrong would get bracelets made at the expense of giving people cancer when he has had cancer himself?
I'm not bashing you for the sake of bashing you, and I hope you don't give a shinguard about my opinion. I'm bashing a statement that just reeks with "well a friend of a friend of a cousin of her friend says the bracelets actually CAUSE cancer during manufacturing"
