Cimco who has the contract with the Calgary Flames, Oilers, Jets etc has told me that the dome has needed a overhaul of their underground glycol cooling system for years but its just been constant upkeep and maintenance on it.
We supply Cimco with parts time to time not for the Calgary Flames contract though.
I have heard the last major upgrade was about 6 years ago.

Saddledome ice is some of the worst in the league and is an embarrassment to the Dome. Team is too cheap to pay for a new ice machine in advance of building a new arena. But I totally agree, the quality of the ice is a total joke and has been for 5 years at least.

I don't think the Chinook winds have helped the past few days either

I believe Ken King, years ago, addressed the need to improve the ice plant but that it was waiting on the new building.

Ice plant would be a very small investment in the grand scheme if things. I can't imagine the problem is unwillingness to spend. There must be other explanations, other factors. If it was a problem easily fixed with a small investment, I'm sure it would be.

I am sure it has a lot to do with the temp inside the dome, it is quit warm compared to other rinks. I know for example Phoenix rink is extremely cold went there for a game dressed like I would for a dome game and froze my ass off, I believe they keep there arena around 57 F. The dome fells to be at least 70.

Didn't we just change our ice plant recently...I swear that was an offseason topic just a few years ago.

IMO the rink is too warm, likely hiked up the temperatures to make the games more comfortable for fans

They could kill two birds with one stone if they lowered the temp. Better ice quality and more potential sales from the store.

When I went to the MTS Centre in Winnipeg for a Moose game, it was the coldest I've ever been in a major rink (and it was above 0 outside!). I'm thinking they should probably do the same for the Saddledome.

The ice at Rexall last night looked like the Heritage Classic near the end of the first period. Same problem?

I noticed it was terrible last night - maybe a hangover from having Oprah in the building the night before?

That would probably just leave a few large cracks in the ice... Nothing they couldn't sort out with heavy machinery.

This is a long term problem, here's an article from 2007 about the Flames having mediocre ice: http://www.strathmorestandard.com/20...rk-in-progress.

I remembered something about them losing the guy that was in charge of the ice quality, and it going downhill after that, but I haven't been able to find any documentation except for this: http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showpos...9&postcount=20

Thanks for the replies all. I would find it to be a giant cop out if ownership was using this as leverage for a new arena.

Ice quality has been terrible for three years, and a new building hasn't even been announced let alone given a timeline. I'm not sure what's required to make it right but it's a sad state of affairs currently. Getbak haha if you did some investigation this is probably only rant #2, except that I complain about it all the time I try to be a happy go lucky guy normally!

Heck, you barely need cash. One or two young Chemical Engineering students could be hired from the U of C to work on it for next to nothing [/shameless plug]

Could also be that going from 100 F to 57 F feels a lot colder than going from 0 F to 57 F

I just heard on sportnet during the canucks intermission that apparently the NHL has an app for the players so they can rate the ice and it goes back to the NHL.Apparently the old way was a form that five players filled out.
