of course he can. Ask Rosie O'donnel, she's a member of the "mindless Tom Cruise fan club".
I group scientology with the branch davidians, and all the other weird ass cults out there (peoples temple, unification church, etc). I just can't understand why people follow the idiots who say things like
"In early July I spoke in five cities around Korea at rallies held by the Women's Federation for World Peace. There, I declared that my wife, WFWP President Hak Ja Han Moon, and I are the True Parents of all humanity. I declared that we are the Savior, the Lord of the Second Advent, the Messiah."

Well, I think Cruise has gone off the deep end but I like many of his movies anyway - not all - and from what we're hearing early, it seems like Spielberg has taken another Great Leap Forward in movie making with "War Of The Worlds" so I'll be there to watch it.
But going forward I would agree with nfoitu that stuff like this will either gain him notoriety, which might help his career, or it might sink him deeper than the Titanic.

Can't really see this being the "good" kind of notoriety. People can forgive, or even be entranced by a guy who beats up reporters or throws telephones at concierges, but crazy, goofy, cult recruiter has about as much appeal as someone sleeping in the same bed with a bunch of little boys.

That's from when he went psycho on Oprah. The clip doesn't include him jumping on the couch, etc. and going ballistic.
And scientology is not just another cult, it is a dangerously powerful organization that has tremendous funds and legal and political influence and often engage in extortion and framing of critics of scientology. Many people have been falsely framed and convicted in the US justice system due to the influence of the Church. Some of them have even fled to Canada to seek asylum from continued attacks from scientology.
I personally refuse to watch another Cruise movie again. I hope Katie Holmes smartens up but she's dumbstruck by her childhood hearthrob. Her Catholic parents should watch out for her but Cruise is trying to convert them too.

I also saw the interview this morning. It was fataed. I have never disliked Tom Cruise, in fact, I have enjoyed many of his movies and haven't let his cultish Scientology bother me...but today he was just WEIRD. Someone else said it, but he was very condescending. At times, I found myself agreeing with SOME of the things he had to say, but they way he was saying them was just wrong.

What a whacko!! I wonder, as others have mentioned, if he has always been like this and know one really noticed or if he has just recently become more nuts.
Everything I have seen, read and heard about Scientology has been bad and it seems to have no good qualities about it at all. This just goes to further show me that I was right before. The cultish aspects of it continue to grow the more and more I hear about it.
I love a lot of his movies and like most if not all and in the past have seen him act normal and as a pretty funny guy. Its unfortunate to see him act as he has lately.

The reason we're realizing he's nuts is just before he went on Oprah, he fired his awesome Publicist of about 12 years. In his place, he hired his sister: A devoute scientologist.
As far as I'm concerned his ex-publicist needs a medal, for keeping his madness from us for this long.

In the 70's I was approached by a Scientology recruiter. She was cute so I went along with her to their center. I read some of their literature[ not impressive] and fired off a letter to Ron [they had a cardbkoard mailbox] criticising one of his statements. He wrote back with some nonsense.
I decided to read one of his scifi books to see if their was any depth to this man and the story was one step above a comic book [no offense to comic books but you get the idea]. Glad I easily avoided that walk down the garden path but I should have saved that letter and auctioned it off on ebay.

The New York Times gives Tom Cruise the decision over Lauer . . .
Whatever else it may do - or undo - for the movie star, Mr. Cruise's off-message, antidrug performance on "Today" yesterday on NBC cleared up one misconception about L. Ron Hubbard's mysterious church: Scientology does not command loyalty from celebrities by protecting their privacy and whitewashing their image.
Mr. Cruise seemed unbound, and perhaps even a little unsound, but there was something enjoyably bracing and bold about his outburst.
And . . . .
Morning talk show hosts are facile and heavily scripted, and too often they recite streams of perceived wisdom as if they were undeniable facts. Mr. Lauer showed grace but not much intellectual skill as he was out-debated by a Hollywood actor who described psychiatry as a pseudoscience and said vitamins and exercise could cure postpartum depression.
But Mr. Lauer was also lucky. Mr. Cruise provided exactly what talk show hosts are supposed to elicit from celebrity guests and so rarely do: sincerity. Viewers have become so inured to the gamesmanship of the celebrity "get," that it is now a running joke, even on game shows.

Aren't there any good publicists in Scientology??
He should look into recruiting some of them rather than hot young actresses. His sister doesn't seem to be doing a good job of it.

I think thats kinda Matt Lauer's style, and ever since i started watching that show in the mornings, ive been impressed with how he handles people. He gently prods and asks questions that elicit sincerity from celebrities, and then holds back and watches the celebrities talk their way through the interview. I think he realizes that he can't go on full out attack mode because then others would be hesitant to talk to him, but his style seems to always get more honest (and entertaining!) answers out of his guests. He doesnt kiss ass to celebrities, which is quite nice, but hed much rather let the guests talk themselves into saying something stupid than pull them into it. He doesnt hesitate to ask tough questions, which i often dont find with pop interviewers who usually just ask lamebrain kiss-ass questions that make the celebrity look great.

Oh, this is going to be good. We are watching the beginning of the end of Cruise's perceived sanity. A couple more years of these antics, and Cruise will get grouped into the "stars gone nuts" category. If he isn't already.
It won't be long before people overlook him for roles, and other actors (like Scarlet Johansen) refuse to work with him. That'll cause him to really go off the deep end. And won't it be amusing to see the guy who thinks pschychiatry is a crock, go nuts? :P
I know. I shouldn't find it funny, but I will.
