No such thing these days as "Minor surface rust" IMO. Just try grinding it off and re-painting and see where that gets you!

Cars today have about 1/16 inch medal for the body panels,if you have rust....change the whole damn panel before you lose your mind.

If its just on the surface you might be able to wire brush it away and then repaint over the metal. My dad did that on his Mazda 6 and its been fine since.

Anyone have a good current recommendation for a micropaint place? I've got 2 scuffs I'd like fixed (one deep enough I'm pretty sure this would be appropriate).

Default Rust.....

I have tried to stay out of this as long as possible... Try using some sort of rubbing compound to get rid of the staining on the paint surface. Also CLEAN THE TOP OF THE LIP INSIDE THE WHEEL WELL. Vehicles like the Mazdas and GM trucks especially hold dirt and crud on that 1 inch little ledge. People do not usually clean that lip with the wand wash so it starts rusting. Cutting a piece out and re welding it will only make it rust more. Once you destroy the factory corrosion protection on the INSIDE of the panel corrosion begins instantly. Changing a panel is a good way to get rid of rust if it is a fender or hood or door but on a 1/4 you still have to splice an area on the top and you are still welding so your just creating more problems spreading the rust around. Even with all the corrosion protection materials (gravel guards and wax oils) there is no real cure for rust. Spot repair for prettyness and sell it because it will eventually come back no matter what you do.

Yeah apparently they have 2 locations. I was just there 2 weeks ago so they are definitely still in business. A quick search on yellow pages comes up with this:
Wood Chip Auto

430 53 Ave SE, Calgary, AB T2H 0N4

403-451-9602

That is the location I went to. Maybe give them a call or stop by. I think they are open 8 to 5 on weekdays. The last job they did for me was at least $300 cheaper than everywhere else I asked. ($800 instead of $1100 or more for replacing a front bumper)
