On the subject of CN, my kid (2.5 years) gets a real kick out of watching the trains at the CN yard on 50 Ave. That and the CP intermodal yard north of 106th. What am I going to do to entertain him when they shut down the 52 St crossing there?!? Is there anywhere else that has lots of train activity like there? We used to hit Edworthy but it's so unpredictable there.
Ramsay is a good place to watch freight trains. There's even a little park on the corner of 9th ave and 8th St SE that would be a good vantage point. You could also try the Alyth yards although I'm not sure exactly where a good, safe spot would be.
^^ indeed. They're not even called dirigibles anymore.

Most of CN's operations will be moving from the Sarcee yard to out near Conrich. They are building a new Logistics Park there, to the tune of $100M.
