The recovery time, may make it worth your while though. I can't imagine an extended health care plan wouldn't pay for this though?

I had mine done in the "Shouldice Method" right here in Calgary (Rockyview). It's the standard way to do it now.

I had one about 18 yrs. ago, so well beofre the modern methods. I've got a nice big scar to show for it. Same as Traditional Ale, before the surgery I would still skate, roller blade, lift and carry, and just have to 'tuck it back in; if the hernia popped out. My recovery was pretty okay, I don't remember any major pain, and certainly don't remember having to take percocet, although I was in the hospital overnight. I think I had Tylenol-3's for a few days and low activity for a couple of weeks and that was about it.

My experience is probably totally out of date now given the new techniques, but it wasn't all that bad...

I had an umbilical hernia. Got it beginning of Volleyball season back in grade ten, and spend the whole season pushing that thing back in every time I would jump in the air. Became very annoying.

Anyways, when they opened me up they found 2 other small hernias inside that they also repaired. Needless to say the recovery hurt a lot more than I expected. I sat dead still on the couch for about three days after, got back to playing hockey within 6 weeks, didn't skip a beat after that.

I've had 2 hernia operations. The first was 13 years ago, and the last one was about 2 years ago. Piece of cake both times. Recovery wasn't that bad.

Around the time I got my first one I notified the surgeon that my dad was waiting on his 4th hernia operation. 2 on each side. So the surgeon put a mesh in, just so It would last longer as it seemed to be a chronic problem for my dad, worried it'd be the same thing for me. I was 17/18 at the time. Recovery time was fast, I was pretty quick to do light work outs. Didn't wait the full 6 weeks. No problem with that side since. Still have the scar.

My second one was a complicated one. I waited awhile before I went to the doctor to get an appointment with a surgeon. I'd just pop it in when needed and go about my business. I guess by the time I seen the surgeon it was pretty bad as he got me in within 2 weeks of see'ing him. The first operation took months from my consult to my actual surgery day. He figured it would be a half hour surgery, I was in the operating room for 3 hours. Still was in and out that day. Made an appointment to see him in 6 weeks. I was back at work doing no lifting 3 days later. It didn't seem like a big deal to me. Pain was bad for about 3 days. Again I really didn't wait the full 6 weeks. That side of my was numbe for about 3 months, later told that could be expected.

When I seen the doctor in 6 weeks he was surprised I was walking without discomfort or a cane at the very least. He then informed me that it was a really bad hernia and I was lucky to get in when I did. He did some prodding, and said I was okay to start light excersices, which again surprised him.

The only downfall. I've been trying to get my wife pregnant since then. And nothing. I am now see'ing a urologist and getting my prostate checked for a blockage. The concern is that my hernia operation may have created a blockage. Aparantly that can happen with hernia operations.

Stuff like that happening does concern me. I hope things work out for you.

Well. after two years of waiting (I simply had no need for surgery), I finally had my hernia operation this morning at Rockyview! It was an open surgery with mesh.

The surgery itself was actually surprisingly easy to go through. Now, I'm not in that much pain at all. I hope my pain level stays manageable.

Thanks for all your advice and stories from when I first started this thread! For anyone awaiting hernia surgery themselves, it's not so bad!

I hope this bodes well for my long-term recovery.

I had mine done in October of 2009. Pain will get worse on day 2 and then better after that.

No problem impregnating after.

My Father had a hernia operation in 04 or 05, and he experienced some pain for a couple days and was back to normal within 2 weeks and hasn't had a problem with it at all since.

Just to get the record straight, people are talking about pushing in a piece of intestine back into your abdomen?

Also, I've been having extreme abdominal pain in my stomach muscles for the past 2 days. Really hoping it's just the regular soreness assocaited with working out and playing hockey. Never had muscle pain here quite so badly.

Hernia's are usually pretty painless unless your intestine becomes constricted by the muscle's along the stomach wall. Have you been remembering to go poop?

Depends on the type of Hernia. Mine was an Inguinal hernia and was completely painless.

It's just a visual issue then? You just notice one day that a piece of your intestine is bulging out of your abdomen?

Mine was inguinal as well, and very painful. Ended up in Emerg twice because of it.

From my understanding it becomes painful when your stomach muscles clench down on your extruding intestine.

For me It would protrude 1" from my stomach after sports. I would have to push it back in all the time.

The real danger of having a hernia is strangulation, whre the blood supply to your intestines is cut off. That can kill you, but it's rare. Hence why I had mine for two years before surgery.
