The team that was on the ice tonight at the dome is going nowhere. They are terrible.

It's the first pre-season game.

I thought Gio and Brody were the best Flames, and they looked really good together - would not be at all surprised if they become the top pairing this year.
I thought Culkin struggled in the first, but got better. Sieloff had some good shifts, but also some struggles.
Monahan was pretty good, Poirier had some really good shifts.
First shot went in against both goalies - did the same thing happen in the other game as well? (even though the one on Ramo didn't actually go in)
Let me start by saying that I am rooting for him, and I think fans quit on many prospects far too quickly, but I have to say that Nemisz was not good tonight at all. He simply doesn't have the foot speed to be effective in any way. It's only one game, but yikes...
Had to laugh at the guy sitting behind me "these guys just aren't sharp". Umm dude, it's the third day of pre-season - it wasn't that long ago that day three was still considered quit-smoking week.
For the Oilers, Perron was easily their best player tonight, and Eberle had some good shifts.

Thought Poirier was our best forward tonight, most noticeable for sure.

The more I see Poirier the more I like him... I really hope the Flames are true to their word and the best guys make the squad. Even if that means Poirier makes the team and gets overwhelmed after a couple games and is returned to junior.
Damn shame Klimchuk is hurt. Hope he isn't too banged up and gets in a preseason game.

I was impressed with Monahan tonight and how good he is in the face off dot and defensively. Brodie and giordano were easily the best players on the ice tonight... Both of them were dictating the play so well at both ends of the ice. I liked ramage and poirier as we'll tonight. Culkin hot better as the night went on.

Poirier is one of those players that the puck seems to follow. Drives hard to the net, is solid along the boards, and not afraid to muck it up. I wouldn't be upset at all if he got a few regular season games.

I'm so mad about this game I could spit! Man this team is terrible, they are going now where, our vets suck, our prospects are luke warm at best. Monahan didn't score, what kind of first round pick is he.
That first goalie was too old, and then the second one was too young like Denzel and that others guy from that train movie.
Oh the humanity.

Mike Cammalleri, a qualified observer with 606 NHL games and 210 goals on his resume, liked what he saw from Poirier.
“I saw him finding pucks out there. He seemed to be in the right spot at the right time and that’s not always necessarily lucky. If it happens more often than not, it’s usually because the player has a knack for that and he showed that kind of hockey sense tonight,” Cammalleri said. “He was able to bury a nice goal. He created another chance where he hit a post, showing nice patience to get to the middle and make that play.”

Giordano liked how Monahan got right in there and competed and wasn’t shy.
“He has a lot of skill obviously,” Giordano said. “Sean impressed me tonight. He’s battling, getting right in there against Gordon who’s one of the best in the league. He took a few from him and he wasn’t afraid to get in there before the puck was dropped and butts heads with them a little bit, which is nice to see.”

I was at the game and loved what SOB brought. Physical, always chirping the other players, hacking/slashing after whistles and even joined the rush a few times. Brings an edge to our D that we haven't had for a long time.

Yeah I was there last night too, I actually liked what O'Brien brought. Edgy, chirpy and disturbing shart whenever he was on. He was fun to watch.
What can I say about Poirier? He was dangerous out there... he still seems a wee bit skinny, but his speed / skill / IQ were right up there with the best of them last night.
Was disappointed with Nemisz, and to some extent, Knight.
Everybody else was as expected. Brodie / Giordano... such solid defensemen.

I was at the game last night as well.
TJ Brodies confidence is through the roof. His poise and skating ability remind me a lot of Scott Niedermayer. He will make mistakes with the puck but his speed allows him to get back. Unfortunately that's not the best thing as it reminds me of Letang, however I think he is a much smarter player and will someday be a Norris candidate.. If it weren't for our likely low finish this year in the standings and the East coast bias, I could see him garnering a lot of Norris trophy votes if he hits 45-50 points. For the record, I am not basing this just on last night. To me he is the future leader of this team, and I think he should get to wear an A should one of the captains run into an injury.

I was at the game last night. My observations are as follows:
Brodie is awesome. Probably the best defenceman on the team (not just last night's team, but the entire Calgary Flames organization).
Giordano was solid as always and looked much better than last year. It could be because the opposition was weak, but he looked significantly faster and meaner.
Backlund looks like a solid NHLer. He didn't look out of place with the other vets.
Cammalleri, Stajan, Stempniak and Glencross looked as they always do. Nothing really to add there.
Monahan and Knight were both a giant meh for me. They both look like they need time to develop. I would be surprised if either made the team this year. With that said, Monahan is a big guy and did make a few nice plays. He's just obviously not ready.
Poirier, what can I say about the guy. He's an incredible player. He has blazing fast speed, thinks the game well, is always in the right spot at the right time and has an NHL shot. Oh and he's a big guy that isn't afraid to get involved physically. I honestly think McKenzie et. al at TSN are smoking some funny stuff if they think the guy isn't a first round talent. There is no doubt in my mind the guy will be an NHL star.
Culkin started off painfully bad, but as the game wore on, he was noticeably good. At the end he might have been one of our best defencemen.
O'Brien is horrible.
Nemisz will never make the NHL. He's just a bad hockey player.
Ferland was OK. Nothing special, but I can see him developing into a decent bottom line player.
Sieloff and Ramage are definitely not NHL ready. They were both a step too slow last night and need to work on their positioning if they are to make the NHL one day.
MacDonald was steady as expected. He made all the saves he should have made, but didn't do anything spectacular.
Ortio, though letting in 2 goals looked really solid positionally and has the best rebound control I have ever seen a Flames goalie have since Kipper. I did see the similarities with Kiprusoff and it's actually a bit creepy.
Finally, there was too many Oilers fans there and most of them are ass-hats.

Yeah, O'Brien is a little below average defensively, but I love how mean he played. Made some good hits and kept people honest around the crease which was non-existent last season.
If we're looking at it as a straight Sarich for O'Brien trade, I'm okay with it.

I don't think anyone is going to confuse O'Brien with Larry Robinson, but he brings a meanness - especially in front of the net - tat the Flames desperately need.
