If Conroy doesn’t extend because of Maloney then this will be a tough team to follow. I’ll still judge them based on what actually happens. Here is hoping it’s positive

The last time I found talk from a Flames rep this off putting and concerning was Jay Feaster. The door is still open on Rasmus? What are we doing here?

I do get the feeling that Don Maloney does not believe in building through the NHL Draft due to the random nature of the draft. Unfortunately, this is pretty much the only way to get elite players under the current CBA

I wasn't old enough to appreciate the dark times for this organization during the 90s, but this is the lowest I've ever felt about this team. Lower than the tail end of Darryl, lower than Feaster.

The good news is: anyone who felt bad about cheering for losses is absolved of all guilt now.
This franchise doesn’t give a damn about the fans.

We don't want to go into the season saying, ‘We want to draft in the top five.’ I don't want to, in any way, shape or form, be associated with that, because then, why are we doing this? Just to fantasize we're going to get a star player?
|
Literally no one is clamouring for you to come out and start the season by saying your goal is to draft in the top 5. After two decades of virtually no success we’d just appreciate you saying we’re done trying to smash this square peg into a round hole and we’re going to change things up. It may be hard and it might not work but in an effort to see some sort of progress we can’t just keep doing what we’re doing.
Last year might have been the worst thing to ever happen to this franchise and I’ve completely lost faith in this ownership group / management team and their ability to do anything longer term in nature properly (including the new arena, which will of course be better than the dome but probably end up as one of the most mid buildings in the league).

This is why Maloney failed in Arizona, and I'll be honest its starting to concern me as well.
I'll leave this here, tell me this doesn't sound familiar:
https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/...selling-assets
"Having said that, Maloney doesn't foresee a long rebuild. He wants to turn this around quickly. While the organization will get younger, it can also get more talented in the offseason as the team scours the league looking for help"
"I don't see this as being a 10-year rebuild," Maloney said. "I think we're well positioned contractually in that we can help ourselves in the offseason.
"He's always a name that comes up," Maloney said. "Keith Yandle is a very important part on our team, and he's a good player. He's been a top offensive defenseman for the last five years in the league. I'm not actually out there shopping his name around at all, but people have talked to me about it. I'd like to build that base, not subtract from it. "We don't have enough Keith Yandles".
Rinse, repeat, fail.
This is Maloney's tenure in any sort of hockey operations role.

I doubt that plays into it at all. That was the new arena

The only hope we have is in the hands of the players.
Keep losing.
Request trades away from this place.
Force their hand into drafting in the top-5.
Everything I hear from Maloney makes me believe this team deserves the futility it has experienced, and it's well earned. You know who don't deserve to be dumped on like this? The fans.
Thanks @Royle9 for digging that post up. Just further shows this organization is cooked under Maloney. I hate this so much.
Fire Maloney, and anyone in his camp. There is no hope until he is gone. Even if the organization is forced to draft at the top this year, Maloney will screw it up.

Maloney was hired as a favour to Treliving given their past relationship/mentorship. The fact that he played a minimal role and was then given the POHO is just ridiculous. He needs to retire and ride off into the sunset. Clearly in over his head and has had virtually zero success. Who am I kidding though? These is exactly the kind of person that personifies the Flames. Mediocrity at its finest.

Didn’t give Conroy the same vote of confidence that he gave Huska IMO. Said “We have no intention of thinking there is a need to rejig our coaching staff at all.” but never said anything like that for Conroy
I would still be surprised if Conroy is gone after this season. But if he is gone, so will any faith I have left in this team
His answer to the Conroy question sounded very Treliving-esque, fitting since he was Tre’s mentor. The Process™ is back.

My guess is that if there is actually something to Conroy not renewing it is coming from his end and not the Flames and that is bad news.

Even if they keep losing and intend to trade Andersson, Maloney came right out and basically said in this interview that they would be looking to make a hockey trade.
A hockey trade for the 32nd place team.
This is dark time for this organization and it won't change with this current management/ownership group.

Doesn't translate.
Star players improve franchise value. Friedman has talked about this in the past.
If they're worried about franchise value, they'd tank.

Because if it’s real these are the literal opposite answers from what they should be. I refuse to believe Conroy believes that we should extend Anderson.
Absolutely insane messaging, they let Conroy start a rebuild but are now acting like he was mandated to have us already be playoff contenders by this year. What’s the harm in saying yes we are negotiating with Conroy for an extension instead of “we keep that internal” as if he’s done anything egregiously wrong so far. Fans are 100% on board with Conroy, not on board with Maloney and whoever is instructing him to act like he is.
I hope there’s some way that we can get rid of Maloney and other cooks in the kitchen and go forward with Conny and Iggy as GM/AGM in the future.
|
Said a few positive things about Conroy but not exactly a vote of confidence. I can't believe they released this.

I do get the feeling that Craig Conroy and Don Maloney are at odds here and only one of them will continue with the franchise

Now I'm suddenly wondering about the possibility that Conroy, a lame duck, starts looking elsewhere and mentally checks out or "quiet quits" while he looks at other situations around the league and starts finding a new job.
