Exciting new hardware coming out at the Microsoft event today. What do people think, should we create a General Microsoft Megathread? Surface 4, Surface laptop, Lumia, Band. Some neat stuff.

Lumia phones look enticing!

Wish the Surface Book was cheaper though, $1499 starting is quite high. Although we haven't seen full starting specs yet.

I'm getting a Lumia the day it comes out. I love my Lumia 1020 and will make the switch to the 950XL.

Is that on Win8 mobile right now? How do you like the Windows mobile platform in general?

I've used all mobile devices from BlackBerry, Android, iPhone...but not yet Windows.

I could make up all sorts of excuses, but at the end of the day, I was cheap and lazy to update
Unfortunately, it seems that my video card drivers are no longer being supported, and I can't sync my computer to my smart TV

Can't you buy a windows 7 or 8 upgrade disc (cheaper than an OEM disc) and upgrade to 7/8 then implement your free windows 10 upgrade/using the windows media kit thumb drive to do a clean install? Maybe Memex or somewhere has one in the back collecting dirt they'll sell for cheap?

That, or get yourself a "free key" by walking into Stores with e-Cycling (staples, best buy etc.) and snapping a pic of the soon to be unused windows 7/8 key which you will use with the install once you download the windows iso?

Why wait for retail Win 10 when it's probably going to be the most expensive windows disc OS for sale with the same end result?

I love the Windows mobile platform. major customization for the home screen, feeds where/when I want them, and it's business-friendly. The Microsoft app store has been abysmal, but now that they opened up porting from Android and Objective C app (iPhone), it should get much better.

It is an amazing phone for my daily use, and the fact that I work with Microsoft and their O365 and Dynamics products, it is the perfect phone to use in practicing what I preach.

I was saying the same thing this morning (I also have/love my 1020) but I understand the 950XL will be $849 CAD. A bit steep.

Yeah but I'm hoping it'll go on promo since it'll be released in December, therefore holiday season.

I feel for Microsoft. They bring out a product that really is pushing design - the tablet part of the Surface Book is nearly identical to the iPad Pro in thickness and weight but with true productivity, and is paired with a dedicated GPU housing keyboard that transforms it into a powerful laptop - and it generates just a handful of posts, vs. the Apple event which just makes a minor iteration to longstanding products but generates hundreds of posts.

I wouldn't feel too bad for them, they spent 15+ years just riding the easy Windows + Office desktop gravy train. the fact that they're releasing all these updated versions of products means to me that they see a sustainable future in them. I don't actually think Surface is such an unknown/underappreciated product these days anyhow since I see more and more of them at work now.

for MS, being the hunter rather than the hunted looks good on them. it's taken a long time to shed the image of that fat lazy corporation that Google and Apple are acquiring now. they might not make 2 freaking Hollywood movies in the span of 2 years about Satya Nadella, but maybe for the future of their products it's better that way.

Microsoft isn't stupid. They know that millions and millions of customers are invested in Office / MS SQL / Dynamics stack, and will continue to lead in the business sectors and generate the big bucks. However, they're venturing into personal device territory more and more, with the confidence that their B2B strategy is working just fine. Plus, moving all of their core products to the cloud (O365, Azure, Cortana Analytics/Power BI, etc.) means that they will benefit greatly from SaaS and IaaS subscriptions for years to come.

Microsoft is on the verge of another renaissance, IMO.

They don't need to have a big blockbuster product launch or worry about taking Apple down. With how hard they dominate almost every aspect of corporate IT they can easily afford to just keep chipping away at the domestic market, which is what they're doing. Seeing a Surface used to be a rare sight, then they became quite common in many office settings, and now they're becoming common to see as personal devices

With how good Windows 10 is and the massive adoption rate it has, I bet this is where they really start to gain ground on Apple. Much like Google did when Android hit 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and leaped ahead of iOS in functionality and usability

I don't disagree with any of that Hemi, but if I'm an engineer that worked on these products, and my revolutionary innovations generate a blip next to the roar generated by a competitor's incremental advances, I'm still bummed, even if I'm set up well in the long game

It works both ways, I think this is how Sony felt about the PS3 vs XBox360. IIRC, XBox was easier to program on since it didn't use the cell architecture and blu ray the PS3 used. XBox games were less buggy as a result.

Bill Gates started the tablet idea I believe. But it was only Jobs who was able to make it mainstream. However, Gates always leaned more toward the tablet laptop vs the tablet media consumption tool Apple and Google designed. Windows always seems too far ahead of its time with tablet technology.

Bad news - no Canadian mobile provider will be carrying the Lumia 950 or 950XL.

Well its upgrade day, if you don't see me again, Microsoft drove me into diving off of a building.
