I think Trump is actually worse than Nixon.
As bad as Nixon was, I feel that in his own head, he thought he was doing what was best for the country in the long run.
With Trump, I think he is just petty, vindictive and looking out for only his own interests. He would sell his country down the river if it puts him ahead somehow.

Completely agree with this.
I had a similar fear about Kevin O'Leary up here, but luckily that problem solved itself.

Sean Spicer no longer expected to give daily briefings
NO!!!!
Quote:
President Trump may scale back beleaguered White House spokesman Sean Spicer’s public appearances — a troubling sign for someone whose job it is to make public appearances, a new report said Thursday.
The move comes as Trump is also considering reshuffling his communications team as he finds himself enmeshed in a growing number of scandals, Politico reported, citing sources close to the president.
Spicer will no longer do daily, on-camera briefings after Trump’s foreign trip ends next weekend, the officials told the website.

Just want to give the posters on this thread a shout-out and a big Thank You.
I have always been quite a history and current events buff, and lately, I seem to be getting most of my news on American politics from this thread. I still read the WaPost and watch CNN, but calgarypuck is now my main news source. I also, appreciate the varied (non-crazy) opinions and history tidbits.
I just hope the drama doesn't drag on for years, as I don't think I have the stomach to see my investments bleed for a prolonged time. We have an upcoming trip to Florida (of all places) in the summer, but I think that until things settle down it will be our last vacation in the US for a while.

Nixon was intelligent, extremely studious, organized, and competent. Outside of the cover up, he was a competent president.
Trump is destroying all of America's institutions, and ruining what the USA is supposed to stand for. He's stupid, doesn't read, chaotic, and incompetent

This situation (a possible impeachment) does not have a significant lasting impact on stocks.
In the short term, uncertainty is bad. No question. Beyond that, Trump is a side show.
Now if he were to go all tough guy and stir up an actual conflict with North Korea, or something substantive like that, then sure.
But him being an idiot is not a threat to the stock market or your investments.

This, Nixon was a extreme paranoid personality.
But among his biggest accomplishments
His diplomatic strides in China and with Moscow
He established the EPA
Ending the draft
Title IX and desegregation efforts in Southern Schools
Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with Russia.
He was actually pretty competent, he also used the peace dividend to fund social programs.
He was a pretty competent president and got more done through consensus then most other presidents.
But he was a paranoid angry man and that was his downfall.

I don't know, I'm still really doubtful he'll be impeached. Republicans won't do it unless there's some crazy bad smoking gun (and I don't think one will ever come out). And you need 67 votes in the Senate to remove a president, which isn't going to happen no matter how big a blue wave in the mid-terms.
Which leaves either resigning, health problems, or death.
The guy who wrote the Muslim ban EO is reportedly writing Trump's Islam unification speech he's giving in Saudi Arabia; so he might not be coming back from his trip.
But really Trump's image, how he thinks people view him, is the only thing he cares about, so I can't ever see him resigning no matter how bad it gets.
Which leaves health, which is somewhat random.
If I were a betting man I'd be betting on Trump finishing his first term right now since all the odds markets are leaning the other way apparently.

Chaffetz to resign today. Expect announcement soon. Rats off the sinking ship that doesn't want Mueller to find his kompromat.
Quote:
Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) is expected to announce Thursday that he is resigning before the end of this congressional term, according to three sources familiar with his plans.
Chaffetz did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday evening or Thursday morning. Multiple sources say he will leave Congress on June 30.
Chaffetz, 50, is chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, the top investigative body in the chamber. He recently subpoenaed James Comey's memos, and invited the fired FBI director to testify next week before his panel.
Chaffetz told POLITICO last month he had begun exploring employment outside Congress. Several sources in the Capitol say Chaffetz has told his colleagues he will appear on Fox News.

Does Donald make an unexpected - and long-term - stop in Switzerland during his overseas trip this weekend?

I'm wondering when President Hatch will happen. Pence and Ryan are both neck deep into this Russian mess.

You'd think that the Republicans would rather have Pence in the big seat right now he seems to be more of a rank and file controllable republican.
