Honestly, all that is being said is that it is not out of the question that he will be considered for the 2018 Olympic team. Since he was considered for the 2014 team (even though he needed 12 guys injured to make it), it is likely that he will be on the radar for 2018.
Perhaps as much as some are overrating him, you are underrating him? I know that I would be ecstatic to have a 23 yr old dman that is on the Team Canada radar.

Wouldn't Dougie be an example of a 22 year old Dman that should be on team Canada's radar?
Let's see if Hamonic makes the World Cup team next fall.
My opinion is is far more overrated in this thread than underrated.

Now he's getting younger too! Amazing player, able to defy aging now!
He's a good defenseman, nothing more, nothing less. He doesn't have the offensive skill to be elite or a true 1st pairing defenseman.
He has great value, but not the value some have been spouting off. Gio +? Hamilton +? That's insane. Beyond insane even. Hamilton is almost 4 years younger and has outperformed him every year he's been in the league. Gio was the best Dman in the league last year before his injury. Sure, they've had a frustrating first 20 games (actually Hamilton only had a bad first 10 or so games), but there is no chance that Islander fans are jumping up and down about Hamonic's 4 points in 20 games. Hamonic is having a bad year as well, why doesn't it affect his value?
If the Flames pick him up, great, but not at the prices many on here are offering. If one of the other teams picks him up, no big deal, as apparently they will have to give up a defenseman at least as good to get him, so they really won't have gained much. They might even lose out this season, as they would have to integrate him into their system mid stream.
I watched the Montreal NYI game last night and Hamonic looked good. Steady, and reliable. Got his point shot through traffic a couple times. But he wasn't PK Suban out there. Suban was noticeable every shift, he controlled the game at points. This is the level that Gio was at for the last two years, and the level Hamilton projects to. No way are either of these guys are getting traded for Hamonic. And no way any other team is offering up a package similar to that either.

Oh for sure, I think Dougie has really picked it up over the last 7-10 games and I hope he continues to develop and start getting Team Canada looks. If I were to compare the two, I would say Hamilton has the higher ceiling, Hamonic has the higher floor.
But just speaking to Hamonic in particular... The guy would be near untouchable in New York if it weren't for his trade request, so I understand why the Isles asked for Brodie (and I can understand why the Flames said no).
Much like you were saying earlier, Isles are poised to lose this deal, but we can't discount Hamonic as a player because of it.

What's with the hostility? He was 23, and getting looks from Team Canada...now he is 25, and likely getting additional looks...

Nothing tougher than trading a player that a team loves but that player wants out. A bigger problem is they are not trading a superstar here but expecting a return of a star player.

The Mayor John Hoven @mayorNHL
Update on Kopitar talks - told by multi sources close to situation, currently around 8yrs @ $9.75M (remember, can only get 7yrs on open mkt)

That is a lot of money for Kopitar (28yo). Have to start somewhere though.

Thats a lot of money and time on Kopitar. Really like the kind of player he is but he already has some hard miles on him. These last two CBA's aren't doing much to stop teams from spending like this.

If they get Kopitar for less than what Chicago paid Toews, that's a good deal.

THW had a piece on Jimmy Howard being a really good fit for the Flames.
Proposed a trade that had Wideman going to DET for Howard and one of Kindl or Brendan Smith. I think the Flames would need to send one more piece over but I like the bones of the idea. Adding Kindl would be my preference. I like his game that gets a bit over looked in DET. I get the same Hudler kind of vibe out of his situation.
I like Jimmy Howard and is an instant upgrade on what the Flames are deploying right now.

31 year old with a .916 average....I guess I would trade Wideman for that at this point in time. But then we have 4 goalies in one giant clusterfata.

Trade whichever one for a signed Peter Sidorkiewicz Topps hockey card. Then move on with our lives.

I believe Howard still has 4 years left on his contract after this season at $5.3M. I'm a little wary on the term left on is contract. Wideman's is done after next season. I think I'd rather have the cap flexibility.

Howard is a mediocre goaltender, he always has been and is definitely not going to get any better from here on out. Even Wings fans now realize he is not going to be anything resembling a top G. Add in his contract and you have a disaster waiting to happen. Do not want.

Agreed. While Howard is an upgrade on what we have that term is too scary.

Not to mention, a bunch of better goalies will be on the market this summer.

Just like this past summer? Is the market ever filled with good goalies?

The market is never filled with good goalies. But every summer, it is filled with serviceable goalies that you don't have to spend $21 million on.

The only noteworthy goalie available in free agency is Cam Ward. Who has never impressed me outside of his initial playoff run.
Is that unfair?
