I will give Conroy the benefit of the doubt without question, that he can do what he says.

However, fans clamouring, and then happy to hear the exact opposite of what they perceived or assumed was going on, should be cautious...it was also trotted out by the loser who followed Sutter. He talked about skill and speed first. He also claimed to be looking forward to collaborative (mainly because he had no contacts, and again, it's what the owner wanted to hear after Sutter like Treliving, worked on his own as a GM) and other things he knew fans and ownership wanted to hear. It was all hot air.

Again, Conroy is not that guy, he's got class and smarts and is humble, and he's got a guy like Nonis (not Wisebrod), and he's been on the ice and in the room and seen behind the scenes what has gone on here directly, and that's a far cry from the guy helicoptered in and who hoodwinked Murray Edwards in summer of 2011 to run this franchise into the ground.

But he's got his work cut out for him. Moving on from the old core is a good start. Trade for Lindholm who wants a JG or MT pay day. Backlund can go after not wanting to be here after Kadri last offseason, and leading the charge against Sutter.

A goalie has to go. A guy like Hanifin who sees his fellow Americans leave. Andersson may not like seeing Backlund and Lindholm leave, maybe Markstrom as well may not like that.

A captain, sure, but that should come organically, not have to be campaigned for as was done this year.

I'm happy we got Nonis just based off of what Burke says about him in his book.

I really hope we've traded away our last 1st round pick for the foreseeable future.

The sting of Adam Fox forcing his way out before he had any value is greatly reduced if the Flames still have Noah Dobson in the fold because they didn't trade that pick for a few years of an older, expensive and broken down Travis Hamonic.

It's not just that trade but the Jarnkrok, Fattenberg guys we can fill with internal players just wasted picks.

Derek Forbort comes to mind.

Premium on picks drafting and developing and feeding your team from that system. Sounds like what Conroy wants.

He let it slip he wanted Pelts in the preseason but they wants Cody Eakins. Disturbing stuff.

Who knows if Adam Fox even forces his way out if he sees a roster spot for the taking. Of course people say he was always going to New York, but most guys just want to play in the NHL. Being drafted by a team with Hamilton, Hamonic, Stone, Andersson on the right side at defense, and then traded to a team with Hamilton, Faulk, Pesce, sure made that a no-brainer. If Conroy does his job well, a hypothetical "next Fox" might just sign, no drama. Guys of that calibre expect a #1PP, top pair role off the bat. It takes a GM with balls to execute.

If there is an open spot for a mid-round pick, even if he is ripping up the NCAA, I think the team has bigger problems. Correct me if I am wrong, but nobody was projecting him to be a Norris trophy winner.

Players need to earn their spots. Teams need to be honest with them about their opportunity and expectations.

Just watched the presser, and a few things I really like:
  • Craig's enthusiasm (no surprise)
  • Craig's approach (getting younger = what is needed)
  • Maloney's honesty about deficiencies
  • Nonis brought in as a support/complement
I do have a few major concerns and some things I'm just not sure about.
  • Craig has some honesty, but some of the small word/phase choices he had, had me thinking he's not much of a perfectionist. I do want to see a little bit of that
  • Craig has a reputation for blabbering, and that's great but I also see the blabbering going down the line of being a guy who needs to be liked so he'll tell you things from an honesty perspective. You don't see that much for people in his position. I want to see a little kept close to his chest because the more he talks the more other GMs can pick up on "tells" he may give away
  • I thought he was involved in the past in negotiating contracts? When Maloney said that it was a little surprising
Craig doesn't seem to be a guy who will play hardball or will win many trades because of his need to people please. Doesn't mean he'll lose every trade either. I just get that impression right now. I'm completely rooting for him because I like human beings like him and want to see people like that succeed - I'm just not used to seeing that in those high positions. It's refreshing yet a little concerning from a nervousness standpoint.

He's not polished on the media side for sure. What else are we supposed to talk on? His good looks?

Do you want polish or authenticity? You rail against the media constantly and now the guy goes up there with real excitement and passion and you are worried about word choice and polish?
The guy you saw today is who he is.
Moreover press polish is way down the list of things I care about when it comes to the gm of my favourite team.
Seems petty and unnecessarily negative

Love they have Nonis as support for Craig, I think they will compliment each other well.

Does that make Nonis Assistant GM?

It's not negative...it's a fine line. I like the guy a lot. I stated it as such. Not sure why you always make it personal with me but it is what it is.

I think that trying to make leaps such as thinking CC will have “tells” or make bad trades because of his personality are baseless and silly. Maybe just me.

Would you rather hear process a million times? Maybe, like you, other GMs will underestimate Conroy. Also being a perfectionist might be counterproductive in this type of a job. Sometimes you have to pivot to other moves.

On the other hand, players may bargain in good faith and be more inclined to help the team because of CC's personality

Which is good when you have 6/7 expiring contracts coming up.
