That could be an interesting way to make this deal happen.
First rounders in 2022 and 2023 conditional on Eichel playing in the playoffs.
Presumably, he's going to be healthy if he plays in the playoffs.
There is still the risk that he is healthy enough to play, but just isn't as effective as he use to be.

I doubt Buffalo would go for those type of the conditions. Part of the benefit for them of moving on is to divorce themselves both from a player who doesn't want to be there and his health risks. If they are still taking on the health risk - the deal becomes materially less compelling for them.

Monahan + Valimaki + Dube + 1st (top 10 protected) + 2nd for Eichel
5 assets for 1 and allows the flames to keep important pieces of the core to really go for it. Add Martinez and Coleman to the fold with their cup experience and open up some spots for prospects like Zary, Pelletier and Ruzicka to fight for and I think finally I could consider this team as truly taking a stab at a cup for the first time in a very long time. Lots of ifs but I really do hope Treliving adds a game changer like Eichel to the fold.

Why would Buffalo accept any first that is lottery/top ten protected for Eichel?

no i dont think thats a good line at all. No snipers and two guys who should be on separate lines to help lead the rush. Thats a powerplay line not a 5v5 line.

Does Monahan have a NTC? Would he waive to go to Buffalo?

I think the longer they wait the longer they play themselves out of getting assets they think they should get. With the injury concerns and performance drop off surrounding Eichel I think there is a reason why it’s taking as long as it has and the suitors are becoming limited.

Because the other offers are lower. This is an auction plain and simple. The free market dictates the price .

Eichel is one hard hit away from LTIR yet the Eichel crazy train rolls on lol. Not to mention that even if he gets back to 100 percent he will probably play softer subconsciously

Yeah it’s a consideration for sure - I just think going all in on Eichel either fails spectacularly so we go into rebuild more quickly, or it opens up a new competitive window for the team. Ownership will not voluntarily rebuild.

Chicago didn’t get to lottery protect their pick for Jones. I doubt the winning package to Buffalo will be protected either.

I see two outcomes of this trade happening
1. The Flames acquire a young #1 elite centre which instantly upgrades the team
2. The Flames acquire a guy who is injured and can't regain form in which case the Flames are dragged kicking in screaming into a proper rebuild.
Boom or bust. People want out of the soft and gooey middle - one way or the other this does that I think.

Zero chance that Buffalo will accept conditional first rounders. I doubt that's the market. Plus he could have fluke injuries and be otherwise healthy and just miss the playoffs.

Their 2022 first round pick is lottery protected for the first 2 picks.

Just imagine getting a damaged Eichel, paying his $10 million per year for the next 5 years, and the cost ends up being Wright or Bedard, plus Tkachuk and Zary.
That would be devastating for this franchise.

Why would any team give up a 1st rounder in the next two drafts for a player who is about to under go spine/neck surgery and may never be the same?

Which is why you don’t even entertain the idea of making that trade. The negative consequences of making a trade of this magnitude for a broken Eichel damn this franchise to a future worse than anything we’ve experienced, on level equal to or worse than Buffalo or Edmonton have suffered through. This isn’t EA21, this is the future of the franchise.

It's a risk no doubt.
The flipside is you could acquire an elite #1C that are almost impossible to acquire other than by drafting #1 or #2.

Buffalo is smoking funny stuff if they are looking for a big return. He’s damaged goods and he doesn’t want to be there. Suck it up Buffalo like everyone else in this position. Take the loss and move on.
