They updated the menus quite a bit, though the same things are there, it just looks better and there are different paths.
Pretty sure it's the same custom logos, etc.
One thing that has bugged me the last few years is when you back out of a menu (say online vs or EASHL), it takes you back to the very first menu. Very annoying.

If you played NHL 13 Hockey Ultimate Team, you get bonus puck rewards. The amount you get depends on the amount of players you have in your collection, the amount of pucks you have and games played.
I added Iginla and Wheeler to my team. Gave Iggy the captain card of course
argh, i found the return reward. i got about 25K. I went out and bought a bunch of packs... what a waste of time. I should have just used the pucks to buy individual players from the trade bin. i'm not buying another pack all year, i think the best player i got was zubrus and sarich and about 30 players ranging from the 40-60 overall range.BRUTAL.
Anyone having issues with the EB Games HUT reward packs? I entered my code, the download was successful but then I get a message that the code couldn't be redeemed. So frustrating....
I played a bit last nigh, seemed ok, the fighting is revised, and much more random, happens after a huge hit, or a hit or shot after the whistle. Only a one game sample for gameplay, but it seemed decent with default settings. Be a player has been tuned up as well, in a good way I think. Much more realistic.
I haven't said this in a long, long time...but I really like this edition of the NHL series. After years and years of being heavily critical of the game, I am finding quite a bit of enjoyment in the small sample size I have been able to experience thus far.
Everything just seems fresher, especially the menus and interface. I love the digital and modern/sleek look, and everything seems to move quicker and more effectively. The physics in-game are MUCH improved, and I LOVE the fact that it is essentially the same basic idea of gameplay but with far more control and precision. The one-touch dekes are pretty much the same concept as last year, but they seem not only easier to perform but substantially more useful and potent. I also really like the new Be A GM news/rumor feed box. Simple but really cool.
As I alluded, I haven't really played too much but so far I am happily impressed. I'm sure once I get into Be A GM mode a bit more I will discover some things that annoy me, but for now I am going to enjoy appreciating EA's effort and product for once.

In Hockey Ultimate Team when you look at player cards what does "Duration" mean? I have all my guys at 1 duration. I applied a skills card to one of my guys but I didn't take note of the duration number. Are those two tied together?

If you train someone (apply skill cards), the duration is how long it lasts. In order for it to last longer than 1 game, you need to ALSO apply a duration card (which come in different sizes, 15 games etc.).
It only happens on the lower settings. I hardly get them anymore once I increased the difficulty.
I'm on All-Star. Cammy nailed Vrbata, got into an auto-fight, and was subsequently injured. Happens at least 3-4 times a game (not necessarily with injuries).
Going to be the most frustrating 'feature' of this game. Hopefully they tune it out of existence, or at least make those fights optional.

That's my favourite addition this year. I regularly play with a guy online who will make ridiculously dirty hits after the whistle but won't acknowledge the fight when I try to fight him. This way he won't have a choice.
I like the new fighting engine and the auto-fights. Adds a bit more realism IMO.

I love it as well, plus gives me a reason to play McGrattan on the No.1 Line all year

I think you're mistaking the NHL 14 discussion thread for the NHL!!!14!!! Fanboy thread.
no, I'm here to discuss read about the positives and negatives about the game not to hear people post threads saying "I AM NOT BUYING THE GAME",
If someone posts "i bought this game and regret it because of blah blah blah" that's a useful post
"and there it is, not buying.
EA is LAZY."
That is not a useful post and I don't care what a person who didn't buy the game or try it has to say about it.
Q: How do people who don't buy the game able to discuss NHL 14?
A: they can't so any post they say "I'm not buying the game" .. no one cares because they aren't talking about nhl 14 - hence it's not about NHL 14 discussion, it's about them having to go out and say outloud to the world: "I AM NOT BUYING THIS GAME" like their opinion actually counts/that they matter
NHL 14 makes for good gaming. The revisions to the skating mechanics are substantial, and much of what ailed the game last year has been tweaked. Players last year were at times doggedly sluggish but as others have said, there's much more precision this year. By sort of acknowledging that a hockey game needs a certain degree of unrealism, EA's done a great thing and struck a fine balance this year. It could be argued that things are over the top at times (especially the body checks), but at the end of the day, it's a damn fun game.
HUT's dominating my life once again. The duration cards are a good idea and make training far less useless than it was last year. The season-based structure that they've built in to the online component is cool, and provides greater motivation from game to game, I find. I haven't even cracked GM mode yet (will wait until a regular season roster update for that), but I'm interested to see what's lurking in there, also.
Oh, and fighting is actually fun again. It seems to serve a far more true-to-life purpose, and the third-person perspective is far better than the goofy nonsense of the past few years. Being able to see your guy uppercut/jab/grab/pull away is satisfying. As it should be in a hockey video game, it's now fun to drop the gloves and stick up for a team mate who's just been annihilated.
