Just to be clear, there is no "Calgary resident passholder only" parking proposal on the table.

In just a couple of short months I've actually done a 180 on this. I was totally in favour of geting ride of the fee. I read an article and watched a video that made a lot of sense about free parking in general and now think that the fee is fine.
I do think that there should be a more efficient way to collect the fee, but I hope they keep it...

Amendment. Alderman Stevenson, Seconded by Alderman Jones
That the Park and Ride fee at LRT parking lots be eliminated for the majority of users, (increase transportation net budget by 6.1 Million) with a reserved parking system put in place at select lots, no later than 2011 April 14, subject to further recommendations provided, as follows:
• Is the fee a barrier to usage?
• Impacts to spill-over into community
• Adjusting costs to respond to markets
• Shuttle buses
• Impacts to no fee
• Reserved parking and other innovative approaches.
Further be it resolved that Administration provide further options, after consultation with users, if any, for managing parking at LRT and BRT stations to Council no later than 2011 February 14.

Me too. Actually, it was this thread that completely changed my mind. The fee should stay.

Wow, I could have predicted who would be against and won money. Some people never change.

I'm in favor of it to. I have no problem contributing to the transit system because I use it. Take away the parking fee and that money will come from somewhere else, which could end up being pulled from people that don't all use it.

Really? It kind of meandered into the broader topic of the funding burden placed on Calgary by bedroom communities. Is that what changed your position?

Another alternative would be allow people to register online with an account so what you spend gets tracked.
Then let people subtract that from their city tax bill.

I was just thinking about Switzerland, and the hotel I was in was right across the street from a major train station. There is no parking I could see nearby. People rode their bicycles, walked, bused or got dropped off by a loved one, at the station

This is very encouraging for future votes as well. It seems like enough of the idiots were removed from office during the election. Jim and Druh can sit there voting against all of Nenshi's motions and it won't have any effect. Thank god.

Also of note, while we forge ahead trying to get people to take the LRT, Toronto's new mayor claims he is scrapping their plans for LRT...makes me very happy to be in Calgary.

It was a couple of posts about the cost of parking everywhere else. Why should it necessarily be free? I guess my only other city comparison is Rome, and therefore not really valid, but you're not gonna find gigantic free parking lots to ride the metro there. Why should every citizen of calgary be paying taxes for the City to own massive pieces of real estate, and sometimes expensive parkades for people to just use for free? I never park there, but my taxes reflect the fact that the city owns that land. And then there's the plug ins. Who is paying for that if the user isn't? All of us, that's who. Screw that!

I guess if my taxes go up to pay for transit I am going to have to go back to smashing bus stop glass to get my transit moneys worth...
