if your running 4.2 (tethered) use seasonpass, it's better.

This guide here: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=12380 seems to indicate you don't need any ssh blobs. Or at least, it doesn't say that you do need them...
Should I keep following that, or switch to seasonpass?
Edit: Oh wait, never mind. I see the guide is only for 4.1, even though the link I clicked on to get there clearly said 4.2.1.

The latest one. I didn't install the beta version though.
It's all moot for now anyway. It turns out I don't have the right cable for this.

Ah. You do need SHSH blobs to downgrade.
You can get a micro-usb cable pretty cheap. Check a dollar store or just pay a bit more and go to memory express. (same cable as the new blackberries)

Wow XBMC is awesome on the atv2. Obviously not as snappy as you might be used to if you've been using it on a HTPC but totally usable.
Of note is that it does not make the atv2 output 1080p. The atv2 video driver is locked at 720p and you can't change the resolution, period. It will play a 1080p file but it gets downconverted to 720p.
That said, I tested one 1080p mkv and it played back pretty well. The occasional stutter, but I was just surprised it was watchable at all.
Weirdly - the devs have 5.1 passthrough disabled by default. You need to edit the guisettings.xml to get DD/DTS 5.1 audio.

So I was thinking about downloading the update today to take advantage of the NBA League Pass app... but I looked into it first and, of course, there is no NBA League Pass app for Canadians. We just get the MLB one.
I'm getting so tired of this limited-media-options-in-Canada crap.

So hypothetically if they release the SDK, does that open the door to an app like AirVideo, eliminating the need to hack the Apple TV to play different file types?

If you have a huge library of video files that aren't in an Apple-friendly format it might be worth it. I have other apple devices that I like to drop movies and shows onto from time to time, so I like everything to play nice, so I convert everything. If that sounds like a pain, jailbreak away!

If you already have an iPhone or iPad and AppleTV you might want to consider downloading the Air Playit app for either as it works nicely with when pairing Apple TV with your computer via an iPad or iPhone. Plays any format as well. No more conversions! You will also need to download the Air Playit software on your computer as well and set which folders you want the app to access. The app/software is free so it's awesome for streaming files to watch on your AppleTV or iPhone/iPad. I don't quite know how to set it up to access the Air Playit server when not connected to your home WiFi or on the go ... but apparently you can do that as well. I only use it currently when everything is connected to my home WiFi. Air Playit links if interested:

For taking non Apple friendly files(such as AVI) on the go with my iPhone or iPad I use an app called Azul Media Player. I believe it's $1.99 and if you buy it for either your iPad or iPhone you can download it for the other for free. It's super easy to sync. When syncing your iPhone or iPad in iTunes just upload whatever video file to you want to Azul under the App section under Devices in iTunes. It is a $1.99 but sure hell beats converting any file you may download that isn't an mp4 file! Links if interested:

I thought I would bump this. I just got an apple tv 2 from a buddy and was going to play around with jailbreaking to see what goodies I can come up with. Has anyone done this recently or do the old tutorials still hold up pretty good?

The last 2 (or maybe 3) updates for ATV2 do not have a jailbreak AFAIK.

Luckily the guy I got it from is terrible with updating everything so I doubt it has been updated. I will check tonight and see what version it is.
Does Plex have app ad ons like XMBC or is it strictly playing content you have already acquired?
