Dude, trust me. Nobody's mad. Like I said I probably care less about your opinion than you care about your shoes.
You've derailed this thread enough though. So just keep your opinions to yourself.

Really? Keep my opinions to myself? The thread is derailed? Are you seriously that much of a doosh? I offered a different opinion, and you're tripping about it? Y'all buying shoes for insane amounts of money, and I say "uhh, Vans work too", and you're having a fit? Really?
Ok, Q. You win. You really do win. You have successfully shut up a guy that threw a twist into your fashion thread. This business is clearly serious, so I will leave you to it.

It's not really contributing to the thread, and yes, IMO it is derailing the thread when your contribution is pretty much "you guys are ridiculous for caring about this". It's tangentially related only because you made a comment about fashion, but it doesn't contribute to the thread other than to crap on others who are trying to have a legitimate discussion. If you started off with, say, "hey, dress shoes are crazy expensive. I wear Vans instead, and they seem to work pretty well. How about that as an alternative?" it would have probably been better received.
If I went into a My Little Pony forum and my first post was "lol MLP sux, Transformers 4evaaaaaaaa", I shouldn't be surprised if people think I'm an ass.

Yeah, ok. As though I did this seven posts in. The f-ing thread has nearly 300 posts. You're butthurt, too? I've got so many apologies to make here. How dare I joke around on a Tuesday night about fashion.
Point taken, bros. Fashion is not to be fugged with. Molto importanto.

Yes, butthurt. Explaining why you were perhaps in the wrong, totally butthurt. That was my first post in the thread, btw, because I had just come across it for the first time and right in the latest posts was you, derailing the thread to an off-topic mess.
Definitely nothing wrong with making jokes. Hell, look through my post history and most of the things I post are stupid jokes and random offhand comments. Drive-by comments about how the #### that people care about is ridiculous isn't a joke, it's just in poor taste.
And so as not to derail further, I won't post again on this.

Jesus Christ, it's people like you, and the other two muppets I've been dealing with, that make the internet unbearable. First of all, I did not come along and diss peoples' opinions, I laughed that we have such differing opinions. It's a fashion thread. I talked about shoes and laughed that I don't care about clothes.
Secondly, I did not go on to a My Little Pony site and use my very first post to make fun of people. What the hell planet are you on? Have you seen my join date? Is this my first post? Are you actually a clown that is trolling me? Unreal. Nice comparison.
Man alive, this forum is dying. What a cesspool. There's just no point in being here. You win, dion. Just like Q. Why chat and jibba jabba when we can f-ing fight, right? Success.

I wear jeans, Vans, and a tshirt + hoodie if cold. I don't even own a suit. I seriously cannot imagine spending more than two minutes giving a flying F about whether my pants match my shirt. There is no "match". These are the pants, that's the shirt. Here's what I'm wearing.
But super secret tip for all you guys that are closer to my scale than to p12, black hightop Vans go with everything. I've literally worn the same shoes (when not on a construction site) for three years. And I'm including weddings and xmas parties in that.
|
So what's wrong with the fact I have a GAF meter of 10 vs you have a GAF meter that's obviously higher than zero or 1. You obviously care enough if you've been having a discussion about not wanting to have a discussion about fashion. Perhaps I'm a bit passionate about the topic to engage in it a bit. Cool. I'm sure you like chatting about things you like too.
The overall gist of the thread is that OP was hoping to increase his GAF meter for fashion in a working scenario. A few of us chimed in to give our 2 cents as well as to explain the reasoning why we think our opinion shows a higher GAF meter reading. A significant amount of comments have been about making OP is comfortable with the look and price point, but also making sure OP is comfortable wearing the clothing.
Snob comments? Whoever said it is very likely to not deny their comments were snobby, but also said comments were likely done tongue in cheek.
I'd also point out that while I have way too much to say on the topic, I'm not being a fashion Nazi. In fact, I have worn Vans (low style though, not hi-Top) to a wedding before (part of a larger group, but still wore them at a wedding) and they did look pretty darn good with my bespoke suit. Heck, I wear those same vans at work with dress pants and dress shirt on a regular basis and I personally think it looks pretty decent. I and a few others think it's perfectly fine to wear non-dress shoes with dress pants, but I also have quite a few pairs of dress shoes that are cheaper than the vans that are just as comfy. Just as if you were choosing a color shirt to wear for the day, I like mixing up my shoe combo to keep things fresh. That's just what I like doing.
I personally think hi-top style with dress pants is weird though, but if you're cool with them, you do you. Why bother worrying about what we internet strangers think?
Consider that my fashion sense is probably somewhere in between yours and P12's. I'm no fashion expert nor fashion Nazi, I'm just excitedly blathering on and on in too much detail about clothes. I like looking sharp in my clothes just as much as I like wearing clothes that are comfortable as heck. I'll probably be allied with you in terms of a discussion about the versatility of vans, but I think you and I will be on completely different sides of a coin in terms of the type of clothing we prefer to wear at work. That's perfectly fine too.
I would probably agree with you that vans are versatile and can look good in a semi formal/business affair in certain circumstances, but I wouldn't be surprised if both of us weren't in the majority in that thinking. I can also agree with you that what I like to wear, is obviously not what you like to wear. I think we can also agree that though you prefaced your post with, "No offence to you fashion people", you still commented in a way that ultimately rubbed a few people the wrong way.

Costco has great office style dress pants for $20. No need to look anywhere else if you just need day to day ones.

I’ve always wanted very much to be able to trust clothes from Costco. But they all seem cut to fit Danny Devito.
The socks are solid though.

Wow, serious business in here. While I truly believe there is a time and place for certain types of clothes having just bought a light blue suit with brown shoes, which is totally out of my comfort zone, I am lucky enough to be at a point in my life and career where I no longer care which is good as I have no fashion sense whatsoever and it looks like it saves me a few bucks.
I wear shorts and a t-shirt 90% of the time (for work) but sometimes forget about meetings. I did a big meeting with Dell/EMC with about 10 Dell reps and a couple from my side (VFX) and everyone was in a nice suit but me. Had a good meeting and lunch though and I think we hammered out a pretty good deal. About 2 weeks later I get an email from the VP of enterprise sales and he sends me a picture of him with shorts and deck shoes on with the caption "best meeting ever, thanks for the tip.". Got a good laugh out of that.
I wish I had some fashion sense but I just cannot do it. My brother got it and I did not.
What's a decent shirt to wear with jeans? Like a collard dress shirt kind of thing. Spruce up the jeans an t-shirt look once or twice a year.

I don't give any credence to the "I don't need expensive dress shoes because they are uncomfortable and not good value" argument.
You buy a pair of Vans once a year for $100 - which is honestly their timeline for looking half decent.
I bought these Aldens for $600 about 9 years ago. I have resoled them once. I wear them with chinos, cords, or jeans probably about 80 times a year. They are the most comfortable shoe I have ever owned and when they finally wear out in another 10 years, I will just buy another pair.

That's something the "but it's so expensive" crowd doesn't understand - in many cases, more expensive clothing and footwear is constructed in such a way that they can be repaired or 'refreshed' to extend their life to many multiples what could be squeezed out of a lower quality item... Try re-soling a pair of shoes from Aldo hahaha

No question if you buy a pair of Goodyear-welted shoes they will last much longer than a pair of glued clogs from Aldo.
Plus the hides used are of a much higher quality and aren't burnished over with that weird plastic shiny crap.

As someone that shops from the jc penney clearance section and is just in this thread to see how the upper crust dresses, I also feel like you came into this thread pretty aggressive. If you didn't want pushback you could have been a million times more tactful. And now that you have been confronted, you have doubled down and blamed everyone else for being unbearable. It honestly felt like you just wanted to talk about how awesome your vans are so you could feel superior. But yeah, lets blame the forum; its most likely everyone else and not you....

Yeah. While I don’t believe you have to spend money to look good, for the most part of you spend more on a piece of clothing it makes up the value by lasting significantly longer.
Case in point: 5 years ago I paid $130 for a t-shirt. Yes, a t-shirt. I recommend nobody spend that amount, but I just wanted it. However, that same t-shirt still looks brand new, and significantly better than the t-shirts I’ve bought since then (even in the last year) from the likes of Costco, the Gap, etc. It’s gone through the same washes, been washed the same amount (a lot more, since it’s been around 5 years, but it goes in with all the other t-shirts) and it’s still here and looking as good as new while other newer shirts look like garbage or have already hit the donation bin.
Same with Vans. All the pairs I’ve had look beat to #### after a year (I still wear them because I feel like Vans are supposed to look haggard and it’s pretty much unavoidable if you skate them), but the nicer shoes I have still look fantastic after 3+ years.
I would never buy $600 shoes. But if I did, I have a lot of confidence they’ll give me 6x the life of Vans (or more).
