Johnson and Pickard doesn't make sense because we know Johnson can't seize the job and would have to hope Pickard could be good enough to start the majority if games.

I can't speak for everyone here of course, but when I post about keeping Johnson around it is really as a backup, not as part of a tandem, and for sure not as a starter. I don't think that Elliott would come back to the Flames as a backup, but I do agree that Elliott is a better goalie than Johnson is.
For me, I want one of these three things to happen for next season:
1) A brand new tandem with 2 up and coming goalies - Raanta, Grubauer, Korpisalo, Mrazek, etc.
Or
2) A legitimate starting goalie with Johnson as backup - Fleury, Schneider, whom else may be available.
Or (my last hope)
3) One of the up and coming goalies with Johnson backing up.
I think there is a heck of a lot of risk on the number 3 option, but Johnson is a pretty darn good backup caliber goalie who has shown in two consecutive seasons that he is able to function as a starter for a stretch. You don't want him to be your starter, but he is a very good and very experienced backup.
