Part of me would be sad if he beat Howe as I would hope for someone with more stature, for lack of a better word.
wonder what the top 20 list would look like if you add in WHA, KHL (for Jagr) and playoff games for those leagues.

Wow good eye, I think he gets there easily (and I had no idea until this post). He’s slowing down but still has lots to give. And can keep up, he doesn’t look like Neal or anything like that.

My sense is Zdeno Chara plays in Game 5 with broken jaw. New from

I wouldn't read too much into them looking to place him somewhere last season. Vegas took over the affiliation with the Chicago Wolves last season and the Blues didn't have a permanent AHL affiliate. They had an agreement to send some players to San Antonio, but otherwise needed to find other places for their players to play.

This is why Gordie Howe is considered the best ever by many.
If you add up all his NHL & WHA Regular season and playoff games....
He played in over 2400 professional hockey games.
It is an astounding achievement....and will never ever be duplicated.

Absolutely. Some of these metrics, you have what they imply, what people want to make them imply and what they really mean.
Probably tough to make hard and fast rules around ‘could he have played in the NHL when he played in league x?’
In some cases it is obvious.

especially for the time in which he played.
everyone else in the top ten played in era when health, travel and medicine were far beyond what there was in the 40's to 60's, and even the 70's.

Nothing against Marleau, Jagr or any other player who chased the all-time games played record. But there's something special about an athlete playing into his 50s in the NHL.
I hope that record is one that is never broken.

Just to put it in perspective..
An 18 year old could start this upcoming season...play 24 years in the NHL (to age 42), never miss a single regular season game, average 18 playoff games every season...and still not play as many games as Howe did.

Something minor like a broken jaw isn't going to stop Chara...
Based on this photo, it also appears that they amputated his left leg. Still not going to stop him from playing.

Looking at this again, I should add that, but for a full lockout season in 04-05 and a half lockout season in 12-13, he'd likely have passed Howe already.

Chara’s toughness to play is pretty nuts, but wouldn’t there be risk for more damage? Crazy that he was medically cleared.

Not a good start either. That back bump caught him in the chin.
