Well its simple really.

If they dont win best on best the majority of the time, it would be literally incorrect to call them the greatest hockey nation on earth.

It's a shame we don't have best on best tournaments anymore...
I guess all we will have to go by from now till the end of time is tournaments like this.

So... Finland is the greatest hockey nation on earth. At least in the past 6 months or so

what a tournament by Lankinen. Spent time in the ECHL last season and was an AHL backup ... then goes to the WC and is the hero. Goalies are freaking weird.

I'm Canadian

If you're going to congratulate anyone you should congratulate the obviously superior Finnish Hockey program.

Tiny nation outputting hockey players of that quality. They're definitely doing something right

so Kakko wins gold at the U18, U20 and the WC in a span of 13 months. Not bad.

They are a great hockey nation. No question.

They aren't #1 though when its best on best. Full stop.

We have decades of evidence for this.

I'm not gonna lie and say that they would win in a best of whatever series but bo1, everything can happen, and this happened.

I fear that this attitude could be the downfall of Canadian hockey development

The fact of the matter is, in 2019, Hockey development in other nations has most definitely caught up to Canada. Dare I say even surpassed Canada in certain aspects? *shudder* (for example goaltending in Finland)

So historically, of course Canada is the GOAT. But if we don't continue to improve, and we start losing to countries that we have historically beaten, can we really say we're still the best?

The answer to that question is no

Kaapo Kakko and Henri Jokiharju now have a U18, U20 and men's world championships. That's a lot of winning.

I have heard this for 47 years....particularly after Canada barely won the Summit series.

Every single time they dont win some tournament. Hell, before the fall of the Soviet Union it was said Canada had no chance against them...until it happened and Canada won.

The US can win, the Finns can win, the Swedes can win....but none of that is an example of them surpassing any one else as the greatest hockey nation on earth. For that tournament? Sure.

Other countries have gotten better. So has Canada. That's great for the game.

They will win some again and they will lose some. Kind of the nature of sports that way.

In this tournament this year, Finland has a good team who played a great team game. Canada have good individuals made up a good team but didn't play a great team game. That's why Finland won.

Part of it, but the single biggest reason the Finns won was goaltending.

That guy was lights out.

75 shots faced in the final two games against Russia and Canada...1 goal allowed.

Fate requires balance so they'll be Oilers soon enough.

Yes agree. In this kind of one and done tournament, all you need is a goalie that get hot at the right time. And Finland's goal was red hot.

They won because their goalie was better...be real

Three shots in the third

Finland beat Canada twice, and Sweden, and Russia. Only significant loss was the OT loss to US.
That's not one guy getting hot, that's a good team.

They were also protecting the lead most of the third, and would have won without the insurance goal.

BTW IIHF stats say Murray actually had more saves, which probably isn't true, but the game wasn't that one sided. Canada had a ton of shots blocked, especially in the end.
