And they only took 2 penalties against the Caps, 1 against the Pens and managed to kill all 3 against scary looking PP's.

Hopefully that's a trend that continues as they were letting in 2 or more PP goals a game for a while there and with the lack of scoring, it was killing us

Honestly, no offense meant but are we really down to this now? He drew a penalty...yay?

13 GP....not a single point....590 other NHL players have registered at least one.

Stats arent everything as we all know...but this is an abyss he is in.

He, by all rights, should be in Stockton figuring things out but since he cannot get there without getting claimed, its Calgary or nothing.

It's just unfortunate there isn't a thread specific to this topic rather than beating this horse in the post game thread after a successful win.

This is case in point.

Clearly, this is because you continue to ignore certain incontrovertible facts.

Again though, there are some real issues that simply are unable to be ignored. Some are minor (taking penalties as one example cause looks to be addressed), Sam Bennett is a huge one, the PP is another...
Agreed.

This is simply flat out not correct. I posted this in another thread, prior to last night's game:

This is no longer an issue.
They stumbled in the first period last night, but this is not a good reason to simply write off the defensive progress the team has made over the course of the past two weeks.

Watched on PVR.... exciting game but definately another game that Smith was the difference in. Would be nice to see them win a couple games without leaning on him so heavily.

Also OT... but wtf is with the schedule this year. Seems like there is a huge gap of 3-5 days every week and a half and currently the flames don't have a friday or saturday game for like 3 weeks. As a fan I keep losing interest with all the massive gaps and I know booking facilities is challenging but all the back to backs as well looks kind of like scheduling I'd expect in the ECHL.

I think every single positive poster is fully aware that we need to improve in a few areas, and every negative poster is aware that there are positives on this team. It's just a lot more fun to revel in the positives (great move by tkachuk, Johnny being fully engaged, Monahan having the best muffin shot in the league) than it is to dwell on the negatives (some people don't like GG, Hamonic /Brodie /Hamilton not great atm, some people still don't like GG, bottom six scoring vacant, GG is not everyone's favourite, lack of energy in certain periods /games, GG definitely getting outcoached even though we're level, some people angry we're not gifting the opposition a reciprocating penalty because of how soft we are, people hating how GG isn't Daryl Sutter).

Either way, it's a positive that we are where we are without ever hitting top gear, despite concerns over reasons why we haven't.

I liked the pens fans comment about Mike Smith looking like a bear too.

0 points sucks but in my opinion he's still playing better lately than Versteeg, Lazar, Stajan, Frolik and even Ferland for that matter.

Swap Bennett with Ferland for a few games and see what happens

So… Textcritic gives facts and statistics, and then quotes himself giving those same facts and statistics to remind you of what you are stubbornly ignoring… and HE is the one to LOL at?

Why do you keep insisting that the Flames are playing poorly defensively and calling this the most serious issue with the team after I have now several times provided actual numbers which prove this not to be the case?

My primary interest here is to correct the fallacy of the Flames’s supposed inability to match their opposition. In the last several games this has clearly not been an issue.

In their last 3 games, they have faced Dallas, Washington, and Pittsburgh, and given up 4 goals. Total.

For the season, they are 6th overall in goals against.

But no doubt, that is 100% due to Smith right? And the D has absolutely nothing to do with it whatsoever.

I am not taking anything away from Smith, who has been fantastic. But let's try and keep some perspective.

They've been ok in the last three games. Season is longer than three games though.

Yes, the coach was harping on that earlier in the season. Guess what? The team listened and has been much improved lately.

Textcritic already posted it: they went from dead last in SA/G after 6 games to middle of the pack, with a corresponding improvement in goals against. They have also cut down the number of penalties they are taking, and their PK has been performing better lately when it is called upon.

Is there improvement still to go? I certainly hope so. But let's not pretend that they are still as bad as they were to start the season, or use the year-to-date averages as a red herring to distract attention from the upward trend.

Shots against or for isn't a great tell on how good defensively a team is playing. Just look at the Oilers.

So we're good listening to Gulutzan, so long as he's dumping on the team, otherwise he knows nothing about anything.
