Chicago wasn't able to trade the rights of Hayes for anything better than the compensation pick and there were multiple teams rumored he was considering.
The thing is once a player decides to wait it out, they will most likely just wait until all offers are in front of them.

Depends on how much they like the player and how confident they are that they can sign him I guess. You're right there's not much precedent, but for 5-10 slots I don't think it's much of a price to pay, especially with this year's draft considered to be decent at the top of the 1st but pretty poor depth wise.
If the context is that he just wants to go to an organization with less centre depth and would sign for one of any 5 teams, getting to the head of the line probably makes sense. Being able to sign him now is a bargaining advantage, he can come in to their NHL or AHL team this week and get started. It's not like he's a real UFA, his salary is going to be capped at rookie max so they'll all be the same deals with maybe some minor bonus fluctuation. Maybe he wants to burn a year, or maybe he just wants to get started with the organization and not come into training camp cold.
But like I said, I expect he'll sign with the Flames after all the organization has done for him and the support he's gotten from flames fans has been pretty noticeable on twitter over the years. I'd be pretty disappointed in him if he doesn't sign. It's not like the flames are clogged up. Monahan is set but Bennett is not a sure thing to even stay at centre yet and Backlund is a UFA in two seasons if I'm not mistaken.

If he doesn't sign with the Flames I bet he goes to his home team - the Leafs

Gotta think the Canucks are the logical second option. The Leafs will make him play in the minors but I wouldn't be shocked to see the Canucks offer him a spot next year. They have such bad prospects and are just a poorly run organization.
Weisbroad will make it happen if he doesn't sign in Calgary but I am fairly confident he signs with the Flames

I was never once concerned that Gaudreau wouldn't sign.
And I have never been concerned that Jankowski won't sign. However, if he doesn't sign in another day or two, I have to say, that screams him not signing at all.

While i hope he signs, I could see toronto as quite an attractively place.
1) hes from ontario and its the leafs
2) he probably gets an easier path to the nhl because the team lacks depth
3) mike babcock

Hey there,
Any signs of other teams pushing for him or any chance he won't sign with the Flames?

I hope he signed, but if he doesn't its not something I'm going to be overly concerned about. Well except for some posters ankles when they jump off the Jankowski bandwagon.

Yes a 2nd rounder in the 2017 draft if he doesn't re-sign. It would be pick #51 I believe, a full round after where he was originally drafted.

I don't really understand this notion of him needing time to "make a decision".
Was this a big surprise for him? Everybody and their dog has known this contract offer was coming since last fall. Do you really think his plan was to wait until his season was over, and then just wing the decision at the last second?
There may have some small uncertainty about what his AHL salary is going to be, but there's not a lot of leeway for either party and I doubt the Flames are going to play hardball with one of their best prospects over $10k of AHL salary or a rookie bonus that require him to win the Hart and Conn Smyth trophies.
This offer has basically been on the table since September. The fact that we don't have a decision yet doeant sound super promising.
Time will tell.

From what Treliving said the contentious issue is whether Jankowski gets to use a year of his contract by getting some Flames games in this season and collecting early bonus money.
The Flames would rather he go to Stockton for their remaining games.

Might be a bit of an untenable position for the Flames to take given that burning a year of his ELC is really the main advantage they have over the other 29 teams.
