That being said, I'm sure they can trelane this one up or something (he and q were very obviously name dropped twice during this week's episode). So that takes care of my mischaracterization problem. No doubt I will in fact watch it, I am just griping about the idea. I dislike the concept being pervasive in big ticket tv shows.
Pfft....we know who is really responsible!

Spoiler!

No need to qualify it, IMO this is one of the best Star Trek episodes of any series, with the added difficulty of translating 2 animated characters into live action which they completely nailed. I also loved the callbacks to Enterprise, which has been severely lacking in any future Trek references. That was the most I've been entertained by a Star Trek episode in over 20 years

I think we need to throw some props to Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome for being able to bring their animated selves energy to the real world. That has to be tough to act.

Tawny's was more jarring because that voice doesn't sound right coming out of her live action mouth. Not saying she wasn't good or anything, but the voice didn't meet the look.

Jack Quaid was really good.

As for the musical episode, I'm usually not a musical guy, though I've seen some musicals that I've really loved. It comes down to the writing obviously. and the ability of the cast to be in a musical.

But you look at some of the episodic shows that have decided to do a musical episode and for the most part its really been positive, especially if you can protect the cast members who can't sing or dance.

In Buffy, Once more with feeling was probably one of the top episodes in that show and the cast threw themselves into it. Hannigan (Willow) couldn't sing so they gave her one line in the episode and it worked "I really think this lines a filler".

I tend to trust this cast and the writing team on this show to pull it off.

One line that got a good guffaw out of me was Mariner saying to Boimler that the Enterprise crew "talk so slowly". Not something I really consciously noticed until she pointed it out, but the animated cast definitely deliver lines at a quicker pace.

And 'quietly.'

But the Lower Deckers only have 22 minutes and a lot of lines.

I will say, live-action Boimler doing the Boimler 'freak out' was glorious.

Once again Pike/Mount in my opinion stole this episode with his dry humour and facial expressions, but Jack Quaid was also really, really great.

I gotta watch it again, but Newsome...her character is really tough to translate to live action, but I think she did an awesome job.

Like I said, I cant pick any negatives out of that episode, all I'll say is that while he was awesome for what he did I do think M'Benga was criminally under-used.

He'll never look at that tricorder the same way again.

I watched the episode again because I liked it so much. Happy to report that it held up super well on rewatch too. It is just a very good trek episode overall.

NOW, on to some nerddom- I THINK they might be teasing the introduction of the cardassians in SNW.
- The intended grain recipient is Setlik 2. Setlik system is VERY close to the cardassian/federation border, and is the site of notable battles during the Cardassian/Federation war, including one O'Brien was a part of. He became known as the hero of Setlik 3.
- One of the species listed on Uhura's pad as she was trying to decipher the alien language was Cardassian. Notably, Bajoran wasn't listed, though it probably should have been. As an aside, it might have been cooler/more time oriented to have it be bajoran instead of Naussican... lol
- SNW has already done some race relation/rehabilitation in this season. Klingons back to looking like they're supposed to. Commentary on Orion culture. It would be REALLY interesting to see a pre-military junta takeover Cardassia. I think this is the right time frame for that...

Could we be in for a cardy surprise??

Also, they chose to reference the Sisko-time travel back to the Bell Riots (Mariner line).

These could all just be fun easter eggs, but to me they were more targeted than the other easter eggs (e.g. Dom Jot being played on the station where Picard got stabbed by a naussican as the deus ex for the translation.)

I'm pretty sure as she flipped through languages on her PADD that Cardassian and Bajoran came up one after the other...

Another nerdy easter egg: did you catch them name of the grain they were transporting to Setlik II? Tritriticale. An earlier variant of the quadrotriticale that the Enterprise was transporting to Sherman's Planet in the TOS episode "The Trouble with Tribbles", perhaps?

I'm behind on episodes. Just finished episode 3: Back to Toronto. I found it sort of a slog to get though and rolled my eyes at times with the Canadiana they inserted - Timmy's, poutine, "sorry", etc. The emotions at the end seemed a little much as well.

Still, it's so much better than many of the other Trek series, so I'll take it and be happy about it. I can't wait to get to the last episode to see what all the raves are about.

Just remember....Space Hitler, the greatest villain the Federation has ever known....Hails from Toronto.

It all tracks.
