Haha, I keep wanting to get angry with all your jabs at the Flames, but then I just end up feeling bad for you each time.

Except that these days, teams actually have to earn their way into the playoffs. Teams like Winnipeg no longer get in on pity.

If the Flames were playing in 15k seat arena built in the 40's in the 90's, they'd be gone. If Bettman didn't step in personally and nix a a deal to send the Oil to Houston, we would have ZERO Alberta teams. Yet some of these posters are acting is if it's never been in doubt
I think everyone here realizes how close other cities came to losing their teams as well and are grateful that it didn't happen. Also, I would think most people here, myself included, would be very happy to see the Jets come back but for various reasons just can't see the numbers working.

Yes, Winnipeg would probably have a better time supporting a team than Pheonix would right now. Hell... Red Deer could probably as well; does that make Red Deer a viable place to move an NHL franchise?
If the only criteria is "Well, it won't be as bad as in Pheonix!" then a TON of places could get the team.

Guys Bettman has already stated recently, as in the last two weeks, that in certain markets it might be better for teams to play in 15-16000 seat arenas as opposed to 18-20,000.

Here's the quote:

Quote:
Here's what Bettman told the Reuters news agency on Tuesday: "While we play to 93 to 94 per cent capacity, we'd like to play to 100 per cent capacity," Bettman said. "A 15,000-16,000 seat arena might work better in some markets than a 19,000-seat arena."

Another argument about the construction of arenas is that the last 3-4000 seats are the most expensive to be built and the least profitable to fill. It can have an effect on mini-pack sales and season ticket sales. If you are not selling out every game this has an effect as it changes what you can expect for guaranteed revenue.

The fact of the matter is that until a solution comes up (and I doubt it is there right now between Chipman and the other owners) where a team can be bought and placed within the True North Banner it ain't gonna happen.

They need $100 average ticket price to make it work. That is out of the mouth of an owner. 15,000 x 100 x 41 is 60 million in gate revenue. They get all concessions, all licensing and a share of TV revenue plus sponsorship and box revenue.

The 60 million covers the players payroll cap limit- now what about the other 20-30 million in extra costs? They know where to get it but it doesn't matter if the corp structure does not fall into place and a $100 ticket average ticket price.

And this is the big question. How many of these teams with 14000 to 15000 paid attendance are actually profitable . . . probably none.

You can probably count the number of profitable teams in the NHL on less then two hands, and those teams have optimum conditions (constant sell outs, higher then average ticket prices and favorable arena deals.

The NHL doesn't need to add more teams to the league that are probably going to be losing ventures, if they're going to do that then they might as well keep the Coyotes where they are and try to work towards stabalizing the franchise.

There are no guarantees that Winnipeg would be able to keep up optimal conditions that guarantee that they wouldn't need help from the NHL so it isn't worth the effort of moving a franchise there. The NHL needs to find a way to get teams off of the NHL welfare system, not add more to it.

Obviously none - but then none of them have 15,000 capacity either. Previous poster is right, $100 average will probably cut it. You might be able to pull that off if you have a low capacity like 15,000, offer all season ticket plans in five-year contracts (see: Minnesota Wild), build heavy demand and a waiting list then go from there.

And even with that, you still need $20 million from sponsorship/TV.

Doable but very difficult.

It begs a different question though, is the NHL revenue model sustainable for 30 franchises, 26, 24, 20? I don't think the NHL could even answer a follow up question of what defines a successful market in terms of $ per guaranteed revenue stream.

I don't believe Bettman or Daly could answer the question if you gave them 10 revenue streams and asked them what the average amount a team needs to make from them. The model is such a mess that I don't think they could give you any kind of accurate projection.

I honestly don't believe that the NHL model should be based on group think. 30 teams x dollars in total revenue/30 teams.

It has to be built around a model of profitability of each team, anything but will result in the drying up of any potential ownership pool.

Unless you want to run the league like the new arena football league or the XFL where the league owns all franchises and profit or loss are calculated based on a combination of all franchise numbers.

Are there failing markets? Right now absolutely, but is that a problem based around geography or is it based around every single team running and marketing their franchises in a different way?

Can Florida hockey work? Probably we saw successes with Florida and we definately saw great attendance in Tampa Bay under competant ownership and leadership. Same with Carolina and the California teams.

Look, I get it, the bad economy has sapped the NHL's fan base. Bad ownership groups have sapped paid attendance. The NHL doesn't seem to have a book on evaluating incoming owners, and new owners don't seem to have a book on running their franchises. To me thats the problem right there.

And Bettman is right, he really doesn't want to move franchises until these franchises hit the zero point. He fought to save Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa, Buffalo, Pitts and others. Moving a team thats generating a revenue stream in U.S. dollars is still preferable to moving a team to Canada and that revenue stream can't be guaranteed because its in a variable Canadian Dollar.

Todays requirement for a $100.00 average season ticket tommorrow might become $120.00 because the Canadian dollar slides.

Winnipeg getting a franchise is just not a good idea, and the NHL would be buying trouble by moving a team there.

They need to hope that this new group is competant can build some buzz and get the on ice product up to par.

I know its Eklund but pretty interesting. I won't believe it until a real source post the story but here is Eklund's take:

Some breaking news here....

I am told by a VERY strong source th Ice Edge deal to be buy the Phoenix Coyotes is falling apart or may have indeed already fallen apart. The NHL may have to run the team for one more year while they search for another buyer, and if none can be found, "Winnipeg looks to be a very real option."

In fact another source I spoke to added, "This is pointing very much to Winnipeg. In fact it's getting close to the point where we may be able to call it."

I sure hope not, for Coyotes Fan's sake. Let's hope this is just a power play to get the lease figured out...that being said, if the Yotes do have to move somewhere I fully support Winnipeg.

I will be back with my rumor blog shortly on Kaberle, Kovalchuk, O'Sullivan, and Bieksa... and I will be doing a HockeyBuzz Live Podcast at 5pm ET.

Stay tuned...

I do not believe anything coming from Eklund.

Nevertheless, here is a picture taken by a fan at the Coyotes' Open House on July 21, 2010.

I'm not sure if the seats with paper on them are purchased or available.

Although, when watching the Flames play in Phoenix I'm leaning toward the former.
