This is what 2017-2020 Markstrom would have looked like with a competent team in front of him.

Markstrom has to be NHL player of the week. 3 starts with a 3-0 record, 0.33 GAA and stopped 92 of 93 shots. Only flaw is that his even strength save percentage may not meet Ty Conklins lofty standards.

FOUR!
Jacob Markstrom has FOUR SHUTOUTS in nine games.
BTW, since this thread was launched Cam Talbot has a 3.23 GAA and a 0.891 SP. Markstrom has a 1.13 GAA and a 0.960 SP.
Good call, you guys.

Lifetime Suspension

The premise of this thread is an embarrassment.
If he keeps it up, he'll very soon be atop every goalie stats metric in the league.
I move that Markstrom thread become Jacob FRICKIN Markstrom thread.

He’s also moved into seventh in Flames all time shutouts - really Kipper spoiled us for how rare shutouts really are.

Speaking of all-time shutouts:
In the '88-89 regular season, Mike Vernon did not get a single shutout (though Rick Wamsley had two). When asked about it, he said jokingly that he was saving his shutouts for the playoffs.
And promptly backed it up by getting three shutouts en route to the Stanley Cup.

Markstrom’s results have been generally very good.
Let’s supplement with some third party viewpoints
Kevin Woodley talked about his start on Oct 28
“Flames are who we thought they are, they are exceptional right now”
He noted that they were 27th in the league at giving up clear sighted shots (the low percentage easy shots that goalies will take all day - being 27th, allowing lots of these, is not a bad thing)
He also noted the Flames were 3rd in the NHL in slot line plays, plays that go laterally across dangerous areas. They had only given up 7 (!) all year at that point.
Net play shots 31st in league. That’s in tight stuff that a big goalie who is good on his posts will also not mind.
Sutter today was asked about Markstrom’s 4 shutouts
“Generally shutouts are team concept oriented, if your goalies are good enough.”
Asked what stood out for him
“There was a couple of glove saves.
The biggest thing, talking about shutouts, cleaning up around the net, rebound control and getting whistles, things like that are just as important as the saves. That’s what it’s about and that’s what he’s gotten really good at”
The Flames have really put him in a position to succeed, and he is keeping his side of the street clean as well
(I really think any good goalie here would have good results. Even Vladar has directly contributed to his own numbers a bit). As I say, Markstrom is holding up his end of the bargain well
Now 3 on 3, he has not had great fortune so far. Hopefully that turns around as well. To be quite honest, I thought the Flames carried the OT play and were going to win that last OT game, they should even out

Thank goodness the Flames locked Markstrom up at a $6 million AAV before unleashing Sutter on him. Imagine if he was a pending UFA and kept this up all season? He'd be entering Price/Bobrovski/Vasilevskiy contract territory.

Do you have a link for that? I'm curious about the details.
