One more thought: I don't think it's fair to blame this on GG. Yes, having Brouwer out in the last minute with the goalie pulled was dumb, but he doesn't have the line match ups he wants and these guys are all grown men, they shouldn't need a coach to motivate them to win hockey games. The players need to be better. Bottom line.

I was going to watch the game when I got home from work, but going through the rage filled posts in the GT and now reading the PGT, I don't really want to waste my time watching them play like garbage.
Sounds like Smith played well and that's about it. It's really easy -- your best players have to be better than their best players.
So if McJesus, Drysaddle and Tablot are better than Johnny, Mony, Gio, Hamilton, Backlund, Tkachuk, (Bennett) then we'll lose.
Notice that I only named 3 players on their team and 5/6 on ours.

Probably the Flames' worst game of the season so far. Hopefully it stays that way!

By the end of last season the Flames were playing a great team game under GG. They mostly outplayed the Ducks, other than in net. I hated the Hartley replacement and GG hiring, but now is not the time to rush him out the door. GG should have this season to show what he can do with the team that was finally playing his game late last season.

I hope those people drinking koolaids start to realise that pre-season games did mean something, the lacklustre play of preseason does carry into the regular season games. When people start panicky, it is already December.

I hope Gulutzan doesn't ride the Monahan/Gaudreau train while they decide if it's still the off season again, by the mid 2nd it was clear both had their heads in the sand trying to fight threw Edmonton's top line. these two should have been split up if only for a half a period to send a message.
And Brouwer isn't this years whipping boy he's this years nightmare, he is literally the teams worst player, giveaways, bad passes, the puck looks like a hand grenade on his stick, just an incredibly bad hockey player who makes this team worst just taking warm up let alone playing game minutes

I think I get what you're saying, but I will agree on principle and disagree on base. Preseason game results are generally unreliable to determine anything.
However, it is clear that this team's best players do not bring the urgency and compete needed to win meaningful games. Maybe, and most likely, this team, as is, isn't good enough to compete for anything other than a wildcard spot.
The 2017-2018 Calgary Flames today are not good enough to compete for anything other than a playoff birth.
My hope is that Jaromir Jagr comes into the fold and imparts the kind of wisdom and instruction that turns players like Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuk, Bennett, Jankowski, Brodie, and Hamilton into those that understand what it is to be a professional and winner day in and day out.
Unless it is a rather sudden transformation, that is what this season will serve for me. Strangely, that might be OK.

The Calgary Flames are first graders playing dodgeball.
McDavid is Billy Madison.

Was never expecting a win last night, maybe that's why I'm not as angry aside from McDavid getting a hat trick. Hard to win when the other team simultaneously is noticeably bigger and faster than you. The game felt pretty close after 40min, I actually liked the jam we were playing with, I already love Smith too. Not just the timely saves, but the fact he clearly knew he was playing in a rivalry game and wasn't taking any crap.
The demoralizing part was just the sheer lack of offence the Flames were able to produce, our high end forwards are just a little too small and soft for the division they're playing in sadly. Glad they've added a big body in Jagr anyway, it's sorely needed.
Between the Anaheim series and Edmonton, all we've watched lately is the Flames vs. very big, physical, fast teams, which is super frustrating with our smaller group up front. Anxious to watch them take on some actual average-sized teams to get guys like Gaudreau, Bennett & Monahan some confidence and get that mojo back.

I think Gulutzan needs to put Brodie back on the right side. He hasn't been able to adjust.

Gulutzan is so rigid with his defense pairings and forward lines that you kind of wonder if he's ever going to be able to take the next step into being a really good coach. Being able to adapt and change is what makes some of the great coaches great and I just don't see that in this coach as he structures things to a fault as putting a square peg in a round hole is never going to change the results that it's not a good fit but he will spend months if not the entire season doing this.

Re:Glass - please don't get distracted by shiny things. Yes he won a fight and had a few hits. But the Flames were dominated like no one's business when he was on the ice. And this was against guys like Kassian, Khaira and Nurse.
The Flames edge against teams like the Oilers is skilled depth. Playing a bunch of slugs on the 4th line negates that and just plays into their hands.

Well, so far Gulutzan is 0-2 at getting his teams prepared to start a season. Same lack of give-a-crap that we saw in the pre-season.

Warrener on 960 this morning feels that Brodie just plays better on the right side and some players just feel more comfortable playing on a certain side. This is back to my square peg in round hole comment. I don't want to pile on the coach too much after one game but is he ever going to be willing to break out of his rigid idealisms to put his players in position to get the best out of them?

Brodies been horrible since his peak season. Starting to get me worried. Oh and Monahan and Gaudreau play with no spine. Put Bennett on that line ffs

Just switching sides is not gonna fix his defensive lapses. He played the left side after Gio went down in 2015 and was better than on the right side and basically carried the team into the playoffs.
