Yes, and I think UCP had a larger margin in 2023 (+8 was it?) but only really won by 1000 votes decided in 5 ridings. My hope is the recall campaigns at least brings some awareness to voters for 2027.

The other factors include the rise of the RPA and I’m still waiting on news for the Alberta Party rebranding as well. Also wondering if the new ridings change anything.

I don't expect Smith using the NWC change much despite the uproar here or in places like reddit as they are a poor representation of the population as a whole. The people angry are already angry, and the people ignorant will stay ignorant. Smith and the UCP have governed horrendously, and it doesn't make a dent.

I would love to see Nenshi go ahead with a rebranding and cut federal ties. Considering the federal party is on life support with little attempts to change, call the Alberta NDP the Progressive Albertan Party or something similar, something neutral in terms of alliance. Doing it now will also give the new party time to resonate and avoid the pitfalls of the BC Liberals. He's already made the first steps.

Oh and the Alberta Liberal Party needs to die already. It will never happen.

I was also advocating for an NDP name change when Nenshi was in the leadership race but I am a lot less fussed about that now. I think the bigger issue is that Alberta needs to wake up to the demise of the Progressive Conservative party and realize that the UCP is just Wildrose walking around in a PC skin.

The paradigm shift that is required is an understanding that conservatives in general have morphed into something unhealthy to the average citizen. The UCP is neither socially progressive nor fiscally responsible, and when you get right down to it the conservatives of Canada are all running the Republican playbook. Smith's use of the NWC is a huge step toward that paradigm shift as many ignorant people are now learning about the UCP and any small C conservative who thought the UCP had any of the legacy PC values are now waking up to the fact that Smith's UCP is not for them.

Now, if people start looking under the hood, they will start to see that Smith has wasted more money in 2 years than Notley did in 4 years. If they really dig into it, they will realize that with all of that money spent there is nothing to show for it and our lives have gotten worse and not better. Everything is more expensive, more people are unemployed, and the government is covering up scandal after scandal. Smith has failed to deliver on any of her promises and instead has delivered a long list of thing Albertans do not want and did not vote for.

I think Nenshi is an excellent communicator and he excels when there is a crisis. He has an edge that Notley never had, which I think will make him a better opponent to bring down Smith. Also, with Nenshi now being the leader of a team instead of a solo mayor, I think there has been a shift in his style that makes him more respectful and reasonable. He shares the stage with his team in a way that builds credibility.

It will be very interesting to see how the polls look a month from now as Alberta's government is making national news and not in a good way.

As for the Federal NDP... I think there is an interesting opportunity there for Albertans to join that party for free and try to help mold the next iteration of it into a healthy option for Albertans to vote for. Probably worth discussing in another thread...

You eventually came the the correct conclusion at the end. It's the voters, not the party name. No solid Conservative voter(the type that says this is the reason they can't) is going to vote for a new named NDP, and no moderate cares enough about it to matter. It's baffling because the people who keep going back to this well have zero interest of ever honouring their supposed objection to it.

You can look at the Federal Liberals to see how true this is, because they installed a largely Cosnervative leader, and the CPC still had one of their best results since holding a majority. They'll say "this is the reason" but they don't really mean it. And then the cent-e left ends up chasing their tales and excuses when it is a waste of time.

You're giving the average Alberta citizen far too much credit. The majority of Alberta voters are sheep, come election time all they see is orange=bad, blue=good. Nenshi renaming the party to something other than NDP probably won't shift things dramatically, but it might be enough to sway a handful of completely uninformed voters, and that could be all the difference

A few counter-points:
1) Albertans have turned on their conservative government before. Stelmach was bad, Redford was worse, but Smith is so far beyond either that it wouldn't surprise me to see another "revolt" election.

What would be interesting is if Albertans play it as another 1-term reset or if they really commit to a progressive government for a couple of terms and see how much things can improve.

2) Alberta has had so much population growth that the number of "imports" to "born-and-raised" Albertans is rising. It is really hard to measure how much that changes our voting demographics but I expect that it is less and less reliable to use voting history from 15-20 years ago to guess how we'll handle the next election.

A lot of people moving to Alberta are going to look at the UCP ####show and expect better.

3) Albertans typically do not like our government embarrassing us. Making national news in a bad way only makes it harder for us to feel superior to the other provinces. We would much rather see headlines about how awesome Alberta is and how we are the motor that drives the country, etc. etc.

Here is the latest on CTV from an hour ago:

Haven’t seen one of those yet, but I did see a “It is time” sticker on a pickup truck with an image of Alberta departing from the Canadian flag. Problem is, you have to read it clockwise starting from 6 o clock because it’s laid out like this:

Is Time
It

Literacy seems to be an issue here, just further confirms why Danielle wants to dismantle public education.

I was an it’s the voters person until recently I went to this panel with several conservatives talking. There complaint was that the Conservative Party isn’t fiscally conservative enough but Albertans don’t notice because of an emotional connection to the conservative brand.

People associate conservatives with High wages, low taxes, and high spending. There has never been a Conservative government just high spending and low taxes subsidized by oil.

But the emotional connection to those times remain so the UCP gets a free pass. The name unfortunately matters because a large portion of Alberta’s are neither social or fiscal conservatives. They are emotional conservatives.

Personally, I would like to see "Total Recall" as a bumper sticker.

I'm actually slightly worried global economics might hit at just the wrong point in time for this reset again. 2014/2015 was pretty much the worst time in a 20-30 year span to be a low tax resource state. The Smith was absolutely blessed with wild levels resource revenue, completely bailing all of her bone headed corrupt and wasteful spending. And now it is looking plausible that we again put a left wing government in, just in time to suffer from massive deficits in resource revenues.

Then we're gonna get a bunch of uninformed jingoistic ####s telling us how terrible the NDP is for the economy because they don't understand global macro-economic conditions.

Yeah that's my worry too. The NDP were actually better fiscal managers than the UCP but most people just look at deficits vs surpluses without accounting for the oil price at the time.

I am worried that we are entering peak oil demand... the next downturn might be the end of the rollercoaster instead of just a dip in the track.

I am sure that even if we hit peak oil that the oil sands will make us money for the next decade or two but it is going to get tighter and tighter with less money staying in Alberta. Ultimately, the fact that we are not already ready for peak oil is a failing of all of Canada's conservatives as they would all rather deny peak oil is possible than prepare for it and make money selling oil at the same time.

I distinctly remember busboobs promising to fix healthcare in 90 days...

https://globalnews.ca/news/11503721/...-chemotherapy/

That promise was over 1000 days ago.
I know, shes been busy; wrecking education, getting coal mining back on its feet, fighting with Ottawa about everything, helping seperatists, messing with municipal elections, messing with pensions, creating her own police force, etc but at some point they have to actually do something good, right? Right?
