I do have to say that because of how well Treliving handled the presser yesterday given the circumstances, he has left the door open on the 1% chance things blow up in Johnnys face and he circles back. If Treliving hadn't made it clear he respected the decision there's no way this miniscule chance exists.

There are a lot better options for high-end medical care in NYC than Calgary if you've got the money Gaudreau has. That could be a serious factor for Guy.

You'd also have to move her mom and dad here, and possibly other relatives as well (whom they want to stay close to); and I can't begin to imagine talking that many people into a plan like that.

I think Johnny was thinking that he could bump up either Philly or NJ to $11M per year and it's just not happening.

PHI and the NYI don't have the space to do that.

NJD know they are the only real option with them saying he wants to be closer to family and they are probably holding firm with their offer. It's for sure Gaudreau's camp "leaking" the CBJ rumor to try to make it seem like there is competition.

I wouldn't be surprised if the next rumor is "Gaudreau is re-thinking his decision and might be open to returning to Calgary"

I actually think the Flames handled this much better than we could possibly expect.

They literally laid it all out for Johnny, plus brought in a coach and teammates to help him succeed, everything which has now led to him looking at $10 mil + per year money.

It is a lot different from Iginla, where management failed for years at building a winning team & culture around him. Eventually Jarome wanted to win and had to leave to do that, but he was loyal to a fault.

I get a strange vibe from all of this. Yesterday it made sense, today it makes no sense.

Like I said, I don't really get the decision here. He'll have a boatload of money. He could easily buy them a house & keep them close.

He has two sisters and another brother too. His sister also has kids.

His wife and her family play a role too - she might have siblings with kids in the area.

It's not as easy as "uproot the entire family and just move them to Calgary"

29 year old isn’t quite the sales pitch you think it is. Nor is saying his point production varies wildly over 4 years. And no, you can’t just trade rights for Gaudreau. He has a 5 team list. What’s your high end price point for Gaudreau anyway? $13M?

Philly is a cool city, but man there is a big dark underbelly in that city. I am sure the wealthy stay out of the bad areas, but if there is ever an all out class war in America, that place will probably be ground zero. There is one stretch that is like a worse version of Vancouver's downtown eastside, but it seems to go on for miles instead of a few blocks. In fact, I am 99% sure that I witnessed an armed robbery the one time I drove through. You drive, and you don't stop.

Yeah, I stayed in the Kensington neighborhood of Philly and our friends told us our trailer and gear would be perfectly safe and protected by the dealers because they didn't want any police around. I'm guessing where we stayed had a bit of an influence on how I view the city though. East Hastings in Vancouver is pretty rough too and it's sad that people get stuck in a cycle that keeps them from getting out.


I wonder if Johnny is regretting his decision with the Flames now that his childhood team is out...

8x$11.7M would’ve been my max.

It’s symbolically higher than Panarin, who is the most recent example of a player of this caliber hitting UFA.

I would’ve made that offer the morning of the draft.

If Gaudreau had said no, I would’ve said “thank you for your years of service, good luck. Please give your list of 5 teams to Claire on the way out.” (I don’t know if his assistant’s name is Claire)

Then I would’ve gone to Tkachuk and asked if he wants to be here.

“Spare me the yearbook answer, where do you want to play? Because I’m being offered 2OA for you. I’d rather have you. You’re my guy, I drafted you, I think you’re the next captain. At what number would you stay here, and sign today?” (Or today, as it were - you can agree in principle).

Tkachuk would say a number, and I’d come back with the very best offer I was prepared to make for him.

If he said no to that, he’s off to New Jersey.

Honestly, keeping or losing these guys isn’t what bothers me.

What bothers me is losing them for nothing, and not having any deadline except “the moment we can no longer offer 8 years”.

I just don’t see how you run a pro hockey team that way.
